An ancient pilgrimage through the Simbruini Mountains

The Pilgrimage to Vallepietra for Saint Anne is one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions of the community of Roviano, a village in the upper Aniene Valley within the Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio. Every year, at the end of July, the faithful set out on foot to reach the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity in Vallepietra, the destination of one of the oldest and most impressive popular devotions between Lazio and Abruzzo.

Devotion to Saint Anne

The feast is dedicated to Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus, whose feast day falls on July 26th. The faithful depart from Roviano and cross the plateaus and evocative beech forests of the Simbruini Mountains, along a walking route that winds for several kilometers through woods, mountain paths, and panoramas of the Lazio Apennines. Many reach the "Tagliata" area, near the sanctuary, by car, but it is the journey on foot that preserves the deepest meaning of this experience of faith and shared effort.

The destination of the pilgrimage, the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity, stands in a spectacular position, built against a rock face in the territory of Vallepietra. For centuries, it has been a destination for pilgrims who arrive in groups, each with their own banners bearing the name of their town of origin and the image of the Trinity. During the days of the feast of Saint Anne, the sanctuary welcomes the faithful and devotees from the surrounding municipalities for a day of prayer and reflection.

Perched on a hill at over 500 meters above sea level, Roviano preserves a historical heritage that intertwines Roman and Medieval eras, from the church of San Giovanni Battista Decollato to the Baronial Palace with the Museum of Peasant Civilization.
