The great Epiphany bonfire in the Friulian tradition in Basaldella di Campoformido
In Friuli, the night of Epiphany has an absolute protagonist: the pignarûl, the large bonfire that burns in the countryside and villages between January 5th and 6th. It is a very ancient rite, of propitiatory origin: from the direction of the smoke, according to tradition, the elders drew omens about the harvest and the year that was about to begin. In Basaldella, a hamlet of Campoformido in the province of Udine, this rite is renewed every year with the Pignarûl di Basaldella.
The event takes place in the area next to the elementary school in Basaldella, where the large pile of wood is erected. The evening begins in the afternoon with the opening of the stalls and continues with an introductory show, until the most anticipated moment: the lighting of the great pignarûl, preceded by a spectacular silent fireworks display. The party then continues with music and a DJ set.
Around the bonfire, there are no lack of hot drinks to warm up on cold January evenings and a free buffet dedicated to children, while adults can count on a well-stocked stall. It is a festival designed for families, combining the archaic charm of fire with the conviviality of a village event.
The Pignarûl di Basaldella is organized by the Gruppo Insieme with the patronage of the Municipality of Campoformido and the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. An event that preserves one of Friuli's most identity-rich traditions, passing down the rite of the Epiphany fire from generation to generation.
