The historic Carnival festival in the heart of the Bologna Apennines
The Pianoro Carnival is one of the most beloved festivals in the Bologna Apennines: every year, on Carnival Sunday, the center of Pianoro Nuovo transforms into a large open-air stage made of allegorical floats, masks, confetti, and music. Organized by Pro Loco Pianoro APS, the event is now in its 38th edition and has become a well-established tradition for families in the Municipality of Pianoro, in the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, designed and built during the winter months by the master float builders and volunteers of the Pro Loco. The large papier-mâché floats parade through the streets of Pianoro Nuovo, accompanied by masked groups, dances, and lots of music, in a colorful procession that involves both adults and children. Along the route, there are games, entertainment, and the distribution of sweets and small gifts for children.
The Pianoro Carnival reserves a special space for the little ones. Every year, the Pro Loco promotes a creative competition for students of the local primary schools, who are invited to design the flyer and the themes of the Carnival. The most beautiful works are awarded during the festival, with a closing ceremony in Piazza dei Martiri at the end of the parade.
Born in the late eighties, the Pianoro Carnival is now recognized among the historic carnivals of Emilia-Romagna and is included in the regional register. More than just a parade, it represents a moment of strong identity for the Pianoro community: an occasion where associations, volunteers, schools, and residents collaborate to create an entirely popular and free festival.
The event takes place in the early afternoon and lasts until the evening, animating squares and streets with stands, music, and shows. Admission is free, and the event is designed to be enjoyed by families, amidst confetti and streamers. In case of bad weather, the festival is generally postponed to the following Sunday.
The 38th edition of the Pianoro Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 2:30 PM. The day featured music, games, attractions, shows, and the unmissable parade of allegorical floats created by the master float builders of Pro Loco Pianoro along the streets of Pianoro Nuovo.
As tradition dictates, the festival concluded in Piazza dei Martiri with the awards ceremony for the creative competition dedicated to children from the primary schools of the Municipality of Pianoro, who were invited to design the Carnival's themes. Admission was free and open to all.
