The local hamlet carnival that brings the community spirit of Piane Sesia to life
The Piane Sesia Carnival is the signature carnival event of the Piane hamlet, part of the municipality of Serravalle Sesia in the Province of Vercelli, at the gateway to the Piedmontese Valsesia. It is a deeply rooted, popular tradition organized by the Piane Carnival Committee, described by local press as a "revitalized" group that has returned to the heart of hamlet life.
In Serravalle Sesia, the Carnival is not a single event but a mosaic of initiatives animated by four committees: the Serravalle Carnival Committee (the most representative at the municipal level), the Bornate Carnival Committee, the Nobili masks, and, of course, the Piane Carnival Committee. Each group upholds its own traditions, contributing to a widespread Carnival celebration that involves the entire municipal territory and its various hamlets.
The heart of the Piane Carnival is the Children's Carnival, featuring a masked parade designed for the little ones and their families, organized along a route supported by the families of the hamlet themselves. The most social moments of the festival revolve around the parade: the president's aperitif and the committee dinner, occasions that strengthen neighborhood ties and raise funds for local activities.
Like many Valsesia festivals, the Piane Carnival has its own signature dish: panissa (locally also known as paniccia), served during the festival as a moment of popular sharing. It is a tribute to the local peasant cuisine and a highly anticipated event for both residents and visitors.
Among the most significant developments is the establishment of a new headquarters for the committee, housed in a former building linked to the electrical sector (the former Enel building) in the hamlet. This provides a stable reference point which, according to the municipal administration, is essential for maintaining the organization and identity of the hamlets. The Piane Carnival thus confirms itself as a small but tenacious expression of the popular traditions of Serravalle Sesia and Upper Piedmont.
The 2026 edition confirmed the vitality of the Piane Carnival Committee despite historical difficulties regarding the lack of a permanent base, which is now being resolved with the setup of a new headquarters in the hamlet's former electrical building.
The distribution of panissa and the presence of masks brought the hamlet to life, in coordination with the other three committees of the Serravalle Carnival.
Festivities include the distribution of panissa, the signature dish of the hamlet festival.
The Piane Sesia Carnival is held in the Piane hamlet of Serravalle Sesia (VC), in Piedmont. The children's parade traditionally starts in the early afternoon, winding through the streets of the hamlet.
Serravalle Sesia can be reached by car via the A26 motorway (exits in the Romagnano-Ghemme/Borgosesia area) and the Valsesia state road. By train, the reference station is on the Novara-Varallo line. The Piane hamlet is located along the banks of the Sesia river.
Updated dates and programs are published annually on the Piane Carnival Committee's channels and the Visit Valsesia Vercelli tourism portal. Events are generally free to attend; committee dinners require reservations.
