Pescasseroli Legge is the literary festival that has been bringing the evenings of Pescasseroli to life every August since 2019. Located in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo, the event was conceived and directed by writer Dacia Maraini, who shares a deep emotional bond with the town. The festival was born from a simple yet powerful idea: to bring great books and their authors directly to the people, in the town square, at an altitude of 1,167 meters.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Umberto I, which fills up every evening with readers and curious visitors eager to meet the authors. "Feeling the breath of a square that listens, in a small mountain town, gives one confidence and trust," says Dacia Maraini, who personally moderates the dialogues with the guests. The events are free and take place outdoors, usually in the early evening, offering a space for discussion on current affairs, memory, the environment, language, and ethics.
Over the years, the festival has hosted leading voices of Italian culture. The 2025 edition featured guests such as Mario Tozzi, with his account of environmental emergencies; Nadia Terranova, a Strega Prize finalist; journalist Monica Maggioni; linguist Giuseppe Antonelli; and Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia, who reflected on the ethics of artificial intelligence. Alongside the author meetings, the program included musical moments, such as the concert by the Decima Sinfonia choir in the church of Santi Pietro e Paolo.
The event is organized by Fiorella Graziani with the Pescasseroli è W cultural association and is supported by the Center for Books and Reading of the Ministry of Culture. Pescasseroli, recognized as a "City that Reads," confirms its cultural vocation with this festival: the village, birthplace of philosopher Benedetto Croce, combines the natural richness of the National Park with a passion for the written word.
For an evening in the mountains, surrounded by good books and great ideas, Pescasseroli Legge is an event that unites culture, nature, and community in the heart of inland Abruzzo.
The 2026 edition of Pescasseroli Legge is expected in August in Pescasseroli (AQ), Abruzzo. As of now, the exact dates and program have not yet been released by the organization. The festival, conceived and directed by Dacia Maraini and organized with the Pescasseroli è W association, usually takes place in the second half of August in Piazza Umberto I, with free evening meetings between the writer and authors of Italian fiction and non-fiction. It is recommended to check for updates on the official Facebook page and the municipality's channels.
Pescasseroli can be reached by car via the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit) by following the signs for the Abruzzo National Park; the village is about an hour and a half from Rome. By train, the reference station is Avezzano, which is connected by bus lines. The meetings take place in Piazza Umberto I, in the historic center.
All events are free and open to the public, usually taking place in the early evening. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a seat in the square.
As a well-known tourist and ski resort within the National Park, Pescasseroli offers numerous hotels, B&Bs, and mountain huts. Booking in advance is recommended during the mid-August holiday period.
