Three days of tradition featuring the firewood festival, processions, and the dance of the Pupazza
In the heart of the Giovenco Valley, at an altitude of over 1,100 meters and within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the village of San Sebastiano dei Marsi โ the only hamlet of the municipality of Bisegna, in the province of L'Aquila โ renews its Patronal Feast every year in mid-August. This event brings together the entire community and the many emigrants who return to the village for the occasion, making it one of the most authentic popular festivals in the Marsica region.
The festivities take place over three days, from August 18th to 20th, in honor of the village's patron saints, including Saint Anthony the Abbot, Saint Pancras, and Saint Bernard. The rich calendar alternates moments of intense religious devotion with fascinating spectacles rooted in centuries-old traditions passed down from generation to generation.
August 18th opens with the firewood festival, one of the most characteristic rituals of inland Abruzzo. The local population walks in procession through the main street of the village carrying bundles of wood to offer to Saint Anthony: the largest logs are loaded onto the backs of donkeys, while children in traditional dress carry bundles adorned with ribbons and flowers. It is a highly evocative scene that combines faith, community, and rural memory.
August 19th is dedicated to processions and the blessing of the Madonnina, the small statue of the Virgin placed in a hollow of the rock at the entrance to the village. In recent years, the day has also been enriched by a highly appreciated piano concert hosted in the village, which has brought great classical music to the Marsican mountains.
The most anticipated moment arrives on the evening of August 20th: around midnight, the dance of the Pupazza takes place, a spectacle with an archaic and propitiatory flavor. A gigantic papier-mรขchรฉ figure, two to four meters tall and operated by a person inside, is covered in fireworks and made to dance to the rhythm of the saltarella, amidst sparks and music, bidding farewell to the end of the festivities with a pyrotechnic finale.
Beyond the festivities, San Sebastiano dei Marsi is worth a visit for its heritage: the churches of San Pancrazio and Santa Maria delle Grazie, the remains of the 19th-century ironworks, and the hiking trails that cross the park's forests. An authentic corner of Abruzzo where tradition, nature, and mountain hospitality blend into an unforgettable experience.
