Two days of faith, brass bands, and fireworks in the heart of Alta Irpinia

The Patronal Feast of San Leone and the Co-Patron Saints is the most anticipated event of the year in Guardia Lombardi, a village of just over 1,400 residents perched at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level in the Province of Avellino, Campania. Every year in mid-August, the Alta Irpinia town gathers around its patron and co-patron saints for two days that weave together solemn liturgy, processions, live music, and fireworks.
This is not a tourist-driven event; it is a true community celebration, marking the summer return of emigrants and filling Piazza Vittoria—the town's civic heart, home to the Town Hall—with families, market stalls, and locals bringing their own chairs to enjoy the festivities.
The patron saint of Guardia Lombardi is San Leone IX, the Pope who, according to local tradition, stopped in the village in 1054. His liturgical feast day falls on April 19th, a date linked to the historic spring fair. However, this August patronal feast was moved to the height of summer to ensure the entire community could participate when the village is at its most vibrant.
Alongside the patron, the town honors three co-patrons deeply rooted in Southern rural devotion: San Rocco, invoked against epidemics, San Vito, and Sant'Antonio da Padova. Their statues are carried together in a procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and the brass band.
The schedule has solidified over the years around August 11th and 12th, following a recognizable structure:
Recent editions have featured guest brass bands—such as the Città di Pannarano band—as well as evenings of pop music, Latin-tango, and tribute acts. The event is organized by the Municipal Administration in collaboration with the Santa Maria delle Grazie Parish, the festival committee, and the Youth Forum, which has added a dedicated youth evening with DJ sets and guests from the Neapolitan scene.
The patronal feast is not an isolated event; it is part of the Estate Guardiese (Guardia Summer) program, which animates the town throughout August with tournaments, children's games, art exhibitions, musical evenings, beer festivals, and food fairs. Visitors arriving for the 11th and 12th will find a town already buzzing with activity, with events continuing until the end of the month. In the past, the local calendar has also hosted a festival dedicated to maccaronara, the handmade pasta that symbolizes Irpinian cuisine.
Guardia Lombardi is one of the highest municipalities in Irpinia, offering a climate in mid-August that can be surprisingly cool compared to the Campanian coast. The landscape is quintessential inland Alta Irpinia: cultivated ridges, wind turbines on the horizon, villages rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake, and a network of neighboring towns—Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Lioni, Bisaccia—that share the same Apennine identity. For visitors, the Feast of San Leone is the best opportunity to see this community as it truly is: a slow procession through the houses, the band playing under the sun, family tables laden with food, and the square transforming into an open-air theater until the fireworks light up the valley.
The Patronal Feast of San Leone and the Co-Patron Saints is a fixed appointment in the calendar of Guardia Lombardi, in the province of Avellino, and there are no signs of interruption: the event is alive and recurring. At the moment, however, no official program for 2026 has been published, neither on the Municipality's website nor in the Irpinian press that usually anticipates the summer lineup.
The historical reference remains mid-August, with the two central days around August 11th and 12th, and the feast included in the Estate Guardiese program. The structure is consolidated: services in the mother church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, evening concert in Piazza Vittoria, morning brass band parade, solemn Mass and procession with the statues of the patron and co-patrons, brass band concert, and fireworks to close.
As soon as the Municipality, the parish, and the festival committee release the final program—usually between late July and early August—this entry will be updated with dates, times, and names of musical guests.
Guardia Lombardi is best reached by car. It is located in Alta Irpinia, connected by roads to Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Lioni, and Bisaccia, about an hour's drive from Avellino. During the festival, temporary parking areas are usually set up on the outskirts of the center, which remains partially closed to traffic during the procession.
Events are split between the mother church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and Piazza Vittoria. There is no ticketing system: religious services, the procession, concerts, and the fireworks display are open to the public and free of charge.
The village is at nearly 1,000 meters in altitude; even in August, evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. There are few accommodation facilities in the village, so it is advisable to look for lodging in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Lioni, or at agriturismos in the Alta Irpinia area.
