Four days of faith, tradition, and music in Civitella Roveto
In the heart of the Valle Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila, the town of Civitella Roveto renews one of its most cherished traditions every year in late June: the Patronal Feast of San Giovanni Battista. For four days, the town comes alive, blending religious and secular elements in a celebration that stands as a cornerstone of the local community's identity.
The most evocative and distinctive moment of the festival takes place at dawn on June 24th, the day dedicated to the patron saint. At the first light of day, around 4:45 AM, the traditional baptism ritual is held along the banks of the Liri River, accompanied by Holy Mass. It is an ancient ceremony, deeply rooted in the symbolism of water and the figure of San Giovanni Battista, drawing both the faithful and curious onlookers into a solemn, intimate atmosphere. Following this, at 7:30 AM, the procession winds through the town streets, accompanied by the marching bands of Civitella Roveto and Celano.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the Patronal Feast offers a rich musical program that brings nationally renowned artists to Piazza San Giovanni each year. The evenings combine live music, open-air dinners in the historic center, and concerts that keep the town buzzing until late at night, attracting visitors from across the Marsica region and the Valle Roveto.
The festival concludes on the night of June 24th with a traditional concert by the local marching band of Civitella Roveto and, at midnight, a grand fireworks display that lights up the valley sky, officially marking the end of the festivities.
Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee, the celebrations for San Giovanni Battista are much more than just an event: they are a moment of reunion for the entire community of Civitella Roveto and for those who have moved away but return to the village for these days. Faith, tradition, and conviviality merge in a festival that perfectly captures the spirit of the villages in inland Abruzzo.
The Patronal Feast of San Giovanni Battista was held in Civitella Roveto from June 21 to 24, 2026, spanning four days. The opening evening on June 21 featured conviviality, live music, and a dinner in the square in the historic center. On June 22, at 10:00 PM in Piazza San Giovanni, Baby K, one of the most beloved artists of Italian pop, performed. On June 23, it was the turn of I Camaleonti, a historic group of the national light music scene.
On June 24, the patron saint's day, the festival reached its peak: at 4:45 AM, the baptism ritual and Holy Mass along the Liri River; at 7:30 AM, the solemn procession with the bands of Civitella Roveto and Celano; in the evening, a band concert featuring soprano Giulia De Blasis and tenor Benedetto Agostino; and at midnight, the grand fireworks display.
Civitella Roveto can be reached by car via the A24/A25 motorway (nearest exit in the Valle Roveto) and the SS690 Avezzano-Sora road. By train, the Civitella Roveto station is served by the Avezzano-Roccasecca line.
The main events are held in Piazza San Giovanni and the historic center; the baptism ritual takes place along the banks of the Liri River.
Concerts and events in the square are free of charge.
