The patron saints open the summer season of the Val Roia village
In the heart of the Val Roia, where the Roia stream carves one of the most secluded valleys in the Ventimiglia hinterland, the small municipality of Airole (Province of Imperia) celebrates its two patron saints, the apostles Philip and James, every May 1st. It is the first event in the village's long summer calendar, the series of appointments that from May to August enlivens the narrow streets and the main square of the village.
The feast revolves around the Piazza dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo (Square of Saints Philip and James), the true living room of the village, where religious celebration intertwines with community gathering. Airole has only a few hundred inhabitants, and for this reason, the patronal feast retains an authentic and familiar character, far from the tourist-driven logic of the nearby coastal resorts of the Riviera dei Fiori.
Perched along the road that climbs from Ventimiglia towards the French border, Airole is a typical Ligurian valley village, with houses packed tightly together and narrow alleys climbing the slope. The feast of the patrons is an opportunity to discover this little-known corner of western Liguria, where agricultural and religious traditions continue to mark the year.
The Patronal Feast of Saints Philip and James opens Airole's busy 2026 summer calendar. May 1st is dedicated to the two patron apostles of the village, with religious celebrations in the square named after them. From here begins the cycle of Airole events documented by the Riviera dei Fiori press for the season: from the Breil-sur-Roya–Airole running race (May 17th) to the St. John's Bonfire (June 24th), from the Lavender Festival (July 12th) to the Tourist Festival (July 25th).
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including schedules for religious services and side events, will be released by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Airole in the preceding days. The feast focuses on the Piazza dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo, with the religious dimension of the patronal celebration.
By train: Airole is served by the Ventimiglia–Cuneo (Val Roia) line, Airole stop. By car: from the Ventimiglia motorway exit, take the SP64 along the valley.
