Devotion, illuminations, and potato meatballs in the heart of Cilento
In the town of Camerota, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento region and Campania, the Patronal Feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer is much more than just a date on the summer calendar: it is the moment when the town truly comes together. The celebration takes place every year on the second Sunday of July and draws residents, returning emigrants, and visitors to the historic center to discover one of the most heartfelt popular festivals of the Cilento coast.
Saint Vincent Ferrer, a Dominican preacher who lived between the 14th and 15th centuries, has been venerated in Camerota for centuries. His liturgical feast day is April 5th, but the community chose to celebrate him in the height of summer, when the hilltop village can welcome all its children and the many guests who crowd the coast between Marina di Camerota and Palinuro during those weeks.
The religious heart of the festival begins about ten days before the solemn Sunday. The statue of the Saint, carved from olive wood, is displayed at noon next to the altar, and the following day the novena begins: nine days of rosary, prayers, and evening mass that mark the anticipation and involve the entire parish.
On the day of the feast, the community gathers for the morning solemn mass; in the afternoon, the statue leaves the church and travels in procession through the streets and alleys of the town, accompanied by brass bands that alternate between symphonic marches and traditional tunes. It is the most intense and well-attended moment of the entire week: decorated balconies, flowers, and applause as the Saint passes by.
The secular festivities traditionally open on Thursday with the Saint Vincent Meatball Festival, the gastronomic event that has become a trademark of the Camerota celebration over the years. The stars are the potato meatballs prepared according to the local recipe and fried continuously by volunteers: a simple, hearty dish, born from Cilento peasant cuisine, enjoyed standing in the small squares of the historic center, accompanied by a glass of local wine.
With the switching on of the illuminations, the village changes its face: luminous arches along the main streets, brightly lit squares, stalls, and rides for children. The secular program continues in the evenings following the food festival with the performance of a nationally renowned singer and concerts by two brass bands, following a well-established format that combines pop music with the great brass band tradition of Southern Italy. As is customary in Cilento patronal feasts, the closing is entrusted to a fireworks display that lights up the hill of Camerota.
Among the most beloved events in the town is the Saint Vincent Match, a football challenge played at the "Italo Cammarano" sports field that pits different generations of Camerota residents against each other. More than a game, it is a collective ritual of friendship and memory, a way to close the festivities with the same spirit of sharing with which they began.
Camerota is a village of houses clustered on a ridge, a few kilometers from the sea and within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Those who arrive for the festival will find the beaches and sea caves of Marina di Camerota, the coastal paths towards Cala Bianca and Punta Infreschi, and a gastronomic tradition made of extra virgin olive oil, white figs, anchovies, and handmade pasta within easy reach. The patronal feast is the best opportunity to see the real town, which often remains in the background compared to the coast during the summer.
In 2026, the second Sunday of July fell on July 12: the entire calendar of festivities in honor of the patron saint of Camerota, in the province of Salerno, was built around this date. Secular festivities began on Thursday, July 9 with the Saint Vincent Meatball Festival and the switching on of the illuminations in the historic center.
The most anticipated moment of the musical program arrived on Friday, July 10 with the concert by Alessio in Piazza San Vincenzo: the Neapolitan singer, one of the most popular names on the Parthenopean melodic scene, drew a large audience to the town, arriving from neighboring municipalities and the coast.
Sunday was dedicated to the religious dimension of the feast, with the morning solemn mass and the afternoon procession of the Saint's statue accompanied by brass bands. Closing the festivities, on Monday, July 13 at 9:00 PM, was the traditional Saint Vincent Match at the "Italo Cammarano" sports field, a football challenge between different generations of Camerota residents that fills the stands every year.
2026 Festival Program (elements confirmed by local sources; specific evening times are released by the parish and festival committee in the days prior).
As in other Cilento patronal feasts, the Sunday conclusion is traditionally entrusted to a fireworks display; the exact time was not released in advance by the sources consulted.
By car: A2 Mediterranean motorway, Padula-Buonabitacolo exit, then SS517 and provincial road towards Camerota; alternatively, the SS18 and the coastal provincial road from Palinuro. By train: Pisciotta-Palinuro station on the Naples-Reggio Calabria line, then bus or taxi to Camerota (about 25 km). By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi or Naples-Capodichino airport, then rental car.
In the historic center of Camerota (not to be confused with the seaside district of Marina di Camerota): parish church, Piazza San Vincenzo, and village streets. The Saint Vincent Match is played at the "Italo Cammarano" sports field.
Religious events and evening square festivities in Cilento are traditionally free to attend; food at the festival stands and rides are paid. It is advisable to carry cash: not all stands accept cards.
Park in the areas below the village and walk up. In July, temperatures remain high even in the evening, but the village is on a hill and can get cool: a light sweatshirt is useful. For accommodation, the widest range of options is in Marina di Camerota, a few minutes' drive away.
