The patron saint's procession and the charity festival on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius
Few places in Italy are as tied to their patron saint as San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, nestled on the western slopes of Mount Vesuvius within the National Park. Here, the patron saint is more than just a devotion: he gives the town its very name. The Solemnity of Saint Sebastian the Martyr falls on January 20th, and as the municipality commemorates, the following Sunday the effigy of the Saint is carried in procession through the streets, accompanied by civil and religious authorities.
The center of everything is the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Sebastian the Martyr, led by parish priest Father Enzo Cozzolino. In the weeks leading up to the feast, the Sanctuary hosts a packed calendar of celebrations: novenas, confessions, masses with various parish groups, and solemn concelebrations presided over by the bishops of the Church of Naples. In 2026, the rites began on Sunday, January 11th, culminating two weeks later.
The most anticipated moment remains the procession of the Saint's statue, which on Sunday afternoon leaves the Sanctuary carried on shoulders, traversing the town with eight stops in different neighborhoods so that every area can welcome the patron. The evening return of the statue to the Sanctuary, amidst the faithful, illuminations, and applause, is the true emotional climax of the day, with the final blessing imparted by the presiding bishop.
Alongside the religious rites, there is an appointment that has become equally iconic for nearly thirty years: the Sagra do' zuffritte, sasicc' e friariell', held on the Saturday before the procession from 7:00 PM at the bottegucce (small stalls) of Piazza Belvedere. Visitors can taste the most popular dishes of the Neapolitan tradition—soffritto (a spicy meat stew), sausages, and friarielli (broccoli rabe)—prepared by volunteers from the parish community and the Don Bosco Oratory, accompanied by music from local youth. Admission is free, and all proceeds are donated to the parish Caritas to support local families in need; this is what earned the event the nickname "festival of solidarity." The initiative is sponsored by the Vesuvius National Park Authority and the Municipality of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio.
2026 brought an extraordinary event to the town: from May 23rd to 31st, the relics of Saint Sebastian, arriving from the Basilica of Saint Sebastian Outside the Walls on the Appian Way in Rome, were hosted in the diocesan sanctuary. The church remained open twenty-four hours a day to allow for the veneration of the faithful, who arrived by the thousands from neighboring towns. On Sunday, May 31st, an extraordinary procession moved through the town streets. However, the January patronal feast remains the recurring annual appointment for the community.
In San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, the rites for the patron saint's solemnity began on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at the diocesan sanctuary, following the calendar published by the municipality and the parish community led by Father Enzo Cozzolino.
On Sunday, January 18, the solemn concelebration at 11:30 AM was presided over by Cardinal Domenico Battaglia, Archbishop of Naples. Tuesday, January 20, marked the liturgical solemnity of Saint Sebastian the Martyr, the patron saint's day.
On Saturday, January 24, from 7:00 PM, the bottegucce of Piazza Belvedere hosted the 29th Sagra do' zuffritte, sasicc' e friariell', promoted by the Sanctuary community and the Don Bosco Oratory with the patronage of the Vesuvius National Park and the Municipality: soffritto, sausages, and friarielli served by volunteers, music by parish youth, and proceeds entirely donated to the parish Caritas for families in need.
The climax occurred on Sunday, January 25: at 11:30 AM, the solemn concelebration presided over by Monsignor Beniamino Depalma, Archbishop Emeritus of Nola; at 2:30 PM, the departure of the statue for the procession with eight stops in the town's neighborhoods; at 8:00 PM, the return of the statue to the Sanctuary with the blessing of Monsignor Gaetano Castello, Auxiliary Bishop of Naples, who then presided over the final concelebration at 8:30 PM.
2026 also featured an extraordinary event: from May 23 to 31, the relics of Saint Sebastian, arriving from the Basilica of Saint Sebastian Outside the Walls in Rome, were welcomed in the diocesan sanctuary—which remained open day and night—with an extraordinary procession on Sunday, May 31, starting at 3:00 PM.
