The patron saint's feast of Volongo

In Volongo, a municipality of just over four hundred inhabitants in the plain of the province of Cremona, in Lombardy, the patronal feast is the event that has always marked the village's autumn. It is celebrated on the second Sunday of October in honor of Saint Peter Martyr, the village's patron saint, and is inextricably linked to the devotion to the Madonna del Campanile.

The heart of the feast is the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul, a building whose current form dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century, with extensions in the following two centuries. Inside, the chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Campanile is preserved, entirely frescoed and of considerable artistic value: local tradition recalls the apparition of the Virgin that took place in the atrium of the bell tower, an episode around which the village's devotion has been built over the centuries.

A village feast

Volongo's patronal feast retains the intimate and gathered character of the small centers of the Bassa Cremonese: religious celebrations in the parish, the community coming together, the bond with its own history and its own land. It is not a large tourist event, but one of those occasions that tell the deep identity of the villages of the Po Valley plain, where the feast of the patron saint remains the most important moment of cohesion of the year.
