Lavello celebrates its patron saint with legend, relics, and a grand town square celebration
In Lavello, a town in the Vulture area of the Province of Potenza, devotion to Saint Maurus the Martyr is rooted in an ancient and evocative story. According to tradition, in 1060, the horse carrying the relics of the saint and his nine martyr companions stopped at the Church of Santa Maria della Speranza, refusing to proceed further. The bishop then had the relics transferred to two young oxen, which spontaneously headed towards the Cathedral and knelt down: a sign interpreted as divine will, at the origin of the city's devotion.
The patronal feast is celebrated on May 2nd and 3rd. May 2nd commemorates the arrival of the relics in the city: the day is marked by liturgical celebrations and the solemn procession that carries the saint's relics through the streets of the town center, accompanied by the devout participation of the entire community.
May 3rd is dedicated to the civic aspect of the feast, culminating in the grand evening concert in the square. Each year, the administration unveils the name of the guest artist, a moment eagerly awaited by the people of Lavello and a draw for visitors from the entire region. The Municipality emphasizes the role of offerings and the devotion of the citizens, which allow for investment in decorations and attractions dedicated to the saint.
Between faith, legend, and popular celebration, the feast of Saint Maurus is an event that tells the identity of Lavello. An opportunity to discover the Cathedral, the historic center, and the hospitality of a city deeply connected to its protector.
In 2026, Lavello will again honor its protector Saint Maurus the Martyr on May 2nd and 3rd. May 2nd, the anniversary of the relics' arrival, is dedicated to the solemn procession; May 3rd, the civic celebration culminates in the evening concert in the square. The name of the guest artist will be announced by the municipal administration in the weeks prior.
The detailed religious and civic program for the 2026 edition will be released by the Cathedral parish and the Municipality of Lavello. The traditional structure includes:
