Every year in May, the village of Farnese, in the province of Viterbo, gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Isidore the Farmer. It is one of the most heartfelt events on the local calendar, uniting the entire community in a day that weaves together faith, memory, and the ancient rural traditions of the Tuscia region. In the heart of Lazio, near the borders of Tuscany and close to Lake Bolsena, this festival is much more than a religious celebration: it is a moment for the town to reaffirm its identity rooted in the land.

A devotion tied to the land

Saint Isidore, a Spanish farmer who lived between the 11th and 12th centuries, is the protector of farmers and field workers. His story resonates deeply with the Farnese area, where agriculture and livestock have always defined daily life. In Farnese, his feast is a collective act of thanksgiving: the community entrusts the success of the harvest to the saint and gives thanks for the labor of the fields, in a ritual passed down through generations.

The procession with Maremma oxen

The most evocative moment is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the historic center. The silver bust of Saint Isidore is carried on a cart pulled by powerful Maremma oxen and adorned with blooming broom flowers, the yellow symbol of spring in the Mediterranean scrub. The procession, accompanied by the faithful and the local band, moves through the tuff-stone alleys of the village until it reaches Piazza del Comune for a solemn blessing, in an atmosphere that combines religious solemnity with popular warmth.

The blessing of agricultural vehicles and the "under the columns" snack

The day also includes Holy Mass and the characteristic blessing of agricultural vehicles: tractors and machinery parade to receive a blessing for a year of safe and productive work, a gesture that bridges the spiritual and productive dimensions of the town. The festivities conclude with the traditional "under the columns" snack, a convivial moment where the community gathers to share local products and flavors, a symbol of belonging and hospitality.

Farnese and the Tuscia region
