About Saint Donatus Feast

On August 6th and 7th, San Donato Val di Comino, a medieval village in the Valle di Comino (Frosinone province), celebrates its patron saint, Saint Donatus Bishop and Martyr. On the evening of August 6th, a striking torchlight procession accompanies the saint through the illuminated alleys, while August 7th features solemn masses, a religious parade, and music animating the decorated streets. A festival blending faith, tradition, and community at the gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.

A festival that unites faith, tradition, and community

Every year, at the beginning of August, San Donato Val di Comino celebrates its patron saint with one of the most heartfelt festivals in the Valle di Comino summer. The Patronal Feast of Saint Donatus Bishop and Martyr is not just a religious anniversary: it is the moment when this medieval village in the province of Frosinone, Lazio, reconnects with its identity. For two days, the town transforms into a vibrant meeting place, featuring solemn masses, processions through decorated streets, and musical evenings that enliven the squares until late at night.

Saint Donatus, the patron who gives the town its name

The bond between the village and its patron is so deep that it is inscribed in the very name of the municipality. Saint Donatus, Bishop of Arezzo and martyr, has been venerated here for centuries, and his liturgical feast on August 7th has always marked the heart of the local summer. As the organizers themselves note, the celebration represents "a moment of profound connection between faith, tradition, and community," capable of drawing back locals, emigrants returning for the occasion, and a growing number of visitors.

The eve torchlight procession

The most evocative moment of the festival is the evening of August 6th, when lights and music begin to create a magical atmosphere in the village. The traditional torchlight procession in honor of Saint Donatus Bishop and Martyr accompanies the statue of the saint through the alleys of the historic center: a river of flames winding through stone houses, offering one of the most moving sights in the entire Valle di Comino, amidst prayers, music, and light displays.

The day of the feast

August 7th is the solemn day: masses are held throughout the morning, and the procession carries the statue of the patron through the decorated streets of the town, followed by the community and local authorities. The day continues with concerts and musical entertainment filling the squares, in a popular festive atmosphere that unites different generations. Over the years, the civil program has been enriched with evenings featuring bands and musical tributes, turning the event into a highly anticipated appointment even for the younger crowd.

Traditional flavors

Like any self-respecting patronal feast, the Saint Donatus celebration is an opportunity to taste local specialties: above all, grilled lamb, accompanied by typical products of the Valle di Comino, a land of genuine mountain flavors on the border between Lazio, Abruzzo, and Molise.

One of Italy's most beautiful villages

San Donato Val di Comino, included in the "Borghi piรน belli d'Italia" (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) circuit, is one of the Lazio gateways to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The patronal feast takes place at the peak of a summer packed with events promoted by the municipality and local associations: the Via di Banda street festival at the end of July, the Feast of Saint Costanza, and the Tarantella Festival at the end of August, in addition to the Festival delle Storie events. One more reason to plan a visit to this authentic corner of Ciociaria.
