The Patronal Feast of Saint Donatus celebrates Saint Donatus, Bishop and Martyr of Arezzo, co-patron of the Cathedral parish and a figure linked to the very identity of San Donà di Piave, in the province of Venice. The commemoration falls on August 7th.
Devotion in the Cathedral
The heart of the feast is the Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Saint Donatus is depicted in several works: the altarpiece by Giuseppe Cherubini, the lunette by Giuseppe Galletti, and the stained glass window of the weekday chapel. The feast, according to historical accounts, has always been characterized by "sincere piety and devotion" rather than worldly celebrations, with solemn liturgical services.
Faith and civic identity
Over time, devotion to Saint Donatus has also extended beyond the city limits. The feast on August 7th traditionally coincides with the re-enactment of the Friendship Pact, intertwining the religious moment with the historical and civil aspect of the San Donà community.
