The patronal feast of Moncalieri, blending faith, history, and tradition
The Patronal Feast of Blessed Bernard of Baden is the most cherished event in the civic and religious calendar of Moncalieri, a bustling city in the province of Turin, Piedmont, overlooking the Po River just outside the regional capital. Every year, during the second week of July, the municipality and local parishes pay homage to the patron saint with a week of celebrations, culminating on July 15th, the liturgical feast day of the Blessed.
A Margrave of Baden who lived in the 15th century, Bernard of Baden died in Moncalieri in 1458 while traveling on a diplomatic mission. His figure, linked to ideals of peace and dialogue between peoples, became a symbol of the city over the centuries, which proclaimed him its patron saint in 1769. Since then, the bond between Moncalieri and its Blessed has never been broken, further strengthened by the twinning with the German city of Baden-Baden.
The secular and spectacular heart of the festival is the historical and religious re-enactment of Bernard's life, staged in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Dozens of actors and choir members bring the Margrave's story to life, followed by the grand procession with the relic urn that winds through the historic center, accompanied by hundreds of participants in medieval attire and re-enactment groups from across Piedmont and Liguria. Along the route, scenes of medieval life are set up, transforming the city streets into a living tableau.
Alongside the religious program, featuring solemn triduums and Masses celebrated in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Scala and the Church of Blessed Bernard in Borgo Aje, the festival offers high-quality musical moments: from the opening performance by the Moncalieri Philharmonic to orchestral concerts in honor of the patron saint. The week traditionally concludes with fireworks over the Po, which illuminate the river and draw thousands of people to its banks.
Community dinners, dance evenings, and cultural initiatives round out a program designed for the entire city. The Patronal Feast of Blessed Bernard is not just a devotional event: it is the occasion when Moncalieri rediscovers its identity, celebrates its history, and welcomes visitors in a festive atmosphere that blends the sacred and the popular in the heart of Piedmont.
