Grottammare's patronal feast between faith, tradition, and fireworks over the sea
The Festival of the Patron Saint Paterniano is the most cherished event of the summer in Grottammare, a pearl of the Riviera delle Palme in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region. Every year, around July 10th, the Municipality of Grottammare and the town's parishes liven up the historic center, the promenade, and the Foce del Tesino with a program that combines the religious dimension with popular and festive elements, attracting residents and tourists from the Piceno coast.
San Paterniano, born in Fano in the 3rd century, has been venerated in Grottammare since time immemorial, and his feast is rooted in centuries of community history. The celebration preserves a curious and beloved element: the firing of firecrackers and daytime fireworks which, according to peasant tradition, were believed to have the power to "break the clouds" and ward off the devastating summer hailstorms that threatened local harvests. A belief that, year after year, accompanies the opening of the festivities at the Foce del Tesino.
While the details change with each edition, the festival follows a now-established pattern:
The Festival of San Paterniano is part of Grottammare's rich summer calendar, which from June to September offers over four months of events including culture, music, and traditions. Experiencing the patronal feast means discovering the authentic identity of a seaside village in the Marche, where popular devotion blends with tourist hospitality and the beauty of the Blue Flag-awarded promenade.
The Festival of the Patron Saint Paterniano 2026 returns to Grottammare from July 10th to 12th, 2026, as part of the summer program that the Municipality dedicates to culture, music, and traditions. The dates are official, while the complete program is being finalized.
Among the confirmed elements: the firing of firecrackers at the Foce del Tesino to "break the clouds," the artisan market with street food stands, the photo exhibition on local history and faith, and especially the XXVI edition of the Palio del Pattino, the rowing challenge that sees city districts compete. To conclude the festivities, according to tradition, the pyromusical show on the sea.
