About Good Friday in Forano

Every year, in the heart of Holy Week, Forano gathers for the re-enactment of the Passion of Christ and the procession that winds through the streets of the historic center. It is one of the most heartfelt events in the calendar of the Municipality of Forano, in the province of Rieti: a rite of faith and community that unites the parish, brotherhoods, and residents in an evening journey marked by songs, lights, and silence along the alleys of this Bassa Sabina village.

A rite that belongs to the village

The Passion and Good Friday Procession is the most attended religious event in Forano, a small town of just over three thousand inhabitants overlooking the Tiber Valley, in the province of Rieti, in the Lazio region. The date is not fixed: it falls every year on Good Friday, the Friday preceding Easter, and therefore shifts between late March and the second half of April according to the liturgical calendar.

The re-enactment is organized by the parish community in coordination with the municipal administration, which includes it every year among the town's recurring events. This is not a show designed for tourism: it is a popular liturgy that the people of Forano have repeated for generations, and this is perhaps its most precious aspect for those arriving from outside.

How the evening unfolds

The afternoon is dedicated to the liturgical action of the Passion of the Lord in the parish church, with the adoration of the Cross. As evening falls, the most anticipated moment takes shape: the procession leaves the church and winds slowly along the streets and alleys of the historic center, returning to the starting point after passing through the main squares of the village.

  • Passion Re-enactment โ€” the Stations of the Cross accompany the journey, with readings and meditations
  • Evening Procession โ€” the route crosses the medieval fabric of the town, with windows illuminated by candles
  • Songs and Band โ€” funeral marches and traditional Holy Week chants mark the pace of the procession
  • Family Participation โ€” children, young people, and the elderly take part in the procession, each with a role

Forano, a village to discover in the Bassa Sabina

The town preserves the layout of the medieval castle built between the 10th and 11th centuries on the remains of a Roman villa, which passed over the centuries under the control of the Abbey of Farfa and then noble families such as the Savelli, the Sant'Eustachio, and the Strozzi. In 1262, Forano became a free municipality, and in the 14th century, it experienced urban expansion with the construction of the parish church of Madonna del Transito in 1313.

Those participating in the procession thus cross an authentic historic center: the church of the Santissima Trinitร , the church of San Sebastiano, Santa Maria Assunta, and the noble palaces Savelli-Strozzi and Pellegrini-Somma. Not far away is the hamlet of Gavignano, which also has a well-preserved ancient core.

Good Friday in the Rieti area

Good Friday is a pivotal date for the entire province of Rieti: in dozens of towns in the Sabina and the Velino valley, processions of the dead Christ, living Stations of the Cross, and brotherhood parades are repeated. Forano fits into this devotional geography with an intimate, village-style version, where the small scale of the town makes the atmosphere particularly intense.

For those visiting the Sabina in spring, Good Friday evening offers a rare opportunity to see an entire town mobilized around a collective gesture, at a time of year when the olive groves and hills around the Tiber are at their most beautiful.

Tips for visitors

This is a religious rite: it is appropriate to maintain a respectful attitude, avoid flashes and noise during the passage of the procession, and keep the procession route clear. Participation is free and open to everyone.
