The Sannio stuffed pepper festival in San Martino Sannita, every August 13th
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Paparulo 'Mbuttito Festival is the most anticipated summer event in San Martino Sannita, a small town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, Campania. The event was launched in 1992 by the Pro Loco Le Surte, which chose to highlight one of the most iconic dishes of local peasant cuisine, and has returned every year on August 13th since. The 30th edition was celebrated in 2024, and the 31st in 2025: a rare continuity for a town of this size, proving how deeply the festival is woven into the local calendar.
In the Sannio dialect, paparulo means bell pepper and 'mbuttito means stuffed. The dish is a stuffed pepper crafted according to the local recipe: the filling is based on stale breadcrumbs, seasoned with care, and stuffed into peppers that are then cooked until soft and sweet. It is a classic 'cucina povera' dish, born from a tradition that wasted nothing, and for this very reason, it has become the town's gastronomic symbol: you won't find it on restaurant menus, you taste it here.
Alongside the dish that gives the festival its name, the stalls set up by the Pro Loco offer other specialties of the Sannio peasant tradition every year:
You order at the counter and eat at the outdoor tables along the street and in the square: no cover charge, no fixed menu, just the relaxed rhythm of a festival run by volunteers.
The evening usually kicks off around 8:00 PM and continues late into the night, with live music on a street-side stage. The festival area is free to enter: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls. It is a deeply family-oriented event, where children run between the tables and local families gather after dinner.
The heart of the event is Via Carmine Fioretti, where the Pro Loco headquarters is located, along with Piazza Roma, in front of the town hall. Everything takes place outdoors in the town center, just steps from the church of San Martino Vescovo.
On August 13th, the festival effectively opens the most intense period of the San Martino summer. It often serves as a prelude to the August 15th celebrations, which include processions through the historic center and evening shows. Visitors to the festival often find an entire Sannio Ferragosto experience to enjoy.
San Martino Sannita is located in the hilly Medio Calore area, about ten kilometers from Benevento, in a mosaic of small towns where August festivals mark the summer calendar. For those visiting Sannio, this is the most direct opportunity to taste a home-cooked recipe and experience a festival designed primarily for its own residents, with the prices and simplicity that come with it.
At the time of writing, there are no official announcements regarding the 2026 edition of the festival: neither the Municipality of San Martino Sannita nor regional event calendars for August in Campania have listed a date. The most recent reference remains the 31st edition held on August 13, 2025, on Via Carmine Fioretti.
If tradition is upheld, the event should take place in mid-August, in the evening, in the town center, with the bell pepper stuffed with stale breadcrumbs as the star of the stalls, alongside farzora, orecchiette with tracchie sauce, and grilled sausage. However, none of this information is confirmed for 2026: we will update the page as soon as the Pro Loco Le Surte publishes the date and program.
