About Panzanella Festival

Every year on August 17th, Poggio Catino hosts the Panzanella Festival: stale bread, tomatoes, and Sabina extra virgin olive oil served in Piazza Indipendenza to wrap up the Ferragosto celebrations. A tradition spanning over half a century, organized by the Pro Loco, featuring evening food stalls, live music, and dancing in the square. Free entry, authentic village atmosphere, and the true flavors of the Rieti province.

A festival scented with Sabina olive oil

The Panzanella Festival in Poggio Catino, a small village in the Rieti province in the heart of the Lazio Sabina region, is one of the longest-running gastronomic events in inland Lazio. It is traditionally held on August 17th, marking the end of the Ferragosto festivities organized by the Pro Loco in honor of the Assumption of Mary and Saint Roch. In 2024, the event celebrated its fiftieth anniversary.

What is Sabina panzanella?

Panzanella is the ultimate humble dish: stale bread soaked in fresh water, tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil from Sabinaโ€”one of Italy's oldest PDO productsโ€”salt, garlic, and basil. Nothing more. It is the epitome of peasant recovery cooking, created to avoid wasting bread and to withstand the summer heat, which is why it has become the community's defining identity.

In Poggio Catino, the preparation remains strictly artisanal: Pro Loco volunteers prepare the bread and dress the portions in front of the public, using oil produced by the olive groves surrounding the village and tomatoes from local gardens.

Five days of celebration, one night of festival

The festival is the grand finale of a series of Ferragosto evenings that bring the village to life from August 13th to 17th. Every evening, the food stall opens in Piazza Indipendenza around 8:00 PM, followed by musical performances: local bands, tribute acts, ballroom orchestras, and Latin dance nights. On the night of the 17th, panzanella takes center stage, served in the square amidst folk music and accordion melodies, with the participation of local musicians.

Atmosphere and audience

  • Free entry and an open square for everyone, with shared long tables
  • Family-friendly event with evening hours and an informal vibe
  • Strong presence of vacationers and locals returning home for Ferragosto
  • Live music and dancing in the square until late at night

Poggio Catino, the village around the festival

Perched on the slopes of Monte Tancia, Poggio Catino preserves a medieval historic center with castle ruins and a view stretching across the Tiber Valley. The area is dotted with ancient olive groves and hiking trails, making the festival the perfect opportunity to discover a side of the Lazio Region far from the tourist routes of Rome, just over an hour's drive from the capital.

Why it's worth the trip

This is not a festival built for tourists: it is a village feast where the recipe, the location, and the community are one. Visitors will find an essential dish served well, popular prices, and an evening that tells the story of Sabina's peasant culture better than any guidebook.
