The historic Pane Condito festival in the village of Vena, at the foot of Mount Etna
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of Vena, a small village belonging to the municipality of Piedimonte Etneo in the province of Catania, the Pane Condito Festival—known in local dialect as the Sagra del Pani Cunzatu—takes place every summer. Set in the charming Piazza Piano del Santuario, this event is one of the most deep-rooted popular festivals on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna and is considered the pioneer of all other festivals dedicated to seasoned bread that have since sprung up in neighboring towns.
The heart of the festival is the pane cunzatu, literally "seasoned bread": a simple and flavorful specialty of Sicilian peasant cuisine. The warm bread is dressed with olive oil, primosale cheese, tomatoes, salted anchovies, and oregano, following a recipe passed down through generations. During the evening, visitors can taste the pane cunzatu in all its variations, accompanied by local wines and typical products from the Etna region.
The festival is organized by Pro Loco Vena, an association created to promote the historic village through food, cultural, and sporting events, with the patronage of the Municipality of Piedimonte Etneo. The longevity of the event, which reached its 49th edition in 2025, testifies to the strength of a tradition deeply felt by the community. The evening comes alive with 80s, 90s, and 2000s music and traditional group dances that bring together people of all ages in the square.
Held in the middle of August, the Pane Condito Festival is one of the events that kicks off the autumn season of local festivals, linked to the Grape Harvest Festival and the bounty of the Etna land. Immersed in a volcanic landscape of vineyards and citrus groves, the village of Vena offers visitors an authentic Sicilian experience defined by flavors, hospitality, and conviviality. Admission to the festival is free, in the true spirit of a village celebration.
The Pane Condito Festival in Vena returns in 2026 to the village of Piedimonte Etneo. Official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the event traditionally takes place in August in Piazza Piano del Santuario. We recommend following the Pro Loco Vena channels for the final date and program.
The festival is held in Piazza Piano del Santuario, in the village of Vena, Municipality of Piedimonte Etneo (CT), Sicily.
