The challenge of the districts in the medieval village of Sirolo
The Palio di San Nicola is the event that opens spring in Sirolo, a charming village on the Riviera del Conero in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. Born in 2012 and reaching its twelfth edition in 2026, the Palio celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari, the town's patron saint, transforming the historic center into an open-air theater populated by districts, merchants, musicians, and street artists.
The heart of the feast is the challenge between the districts of Sirolo, who compete for the Palio in a trial that is as spectacular as it is symbolic of their identity. The main race is a water relay race: runners, using only one hand, carry a bowl of water along the course, trying to fill their district's cistern in the shortest possible time. A test of speed and balance that involves about a hundred participants each year and ignites the cheers of the district supporters.
The event traditionally unfolds over two days. Saturday is dedicated to the younger generation with the Disfida della Canaja (Challenge of the Youngsters), reserved for children, held at the Parco della Repubblica, featuring games, archery, and a historical encampment, concluding with an evening show in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Sunday is the main day, with the Disfida delle Contrade (Challenge of the Districts) in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the proclamation of the winning district, and the lottery draw.
Throughout the two days, the village is filled with drummers and flag-wavers, ladies and knights in costume, falconers, jugglers, and acrobats. The historical market comes alive in the castle alleys, with artisan stalls and food stands offering the flavors of the Marche tradition. Ancient games and entertainment make the event suitable for families and visitors of all ages.
Organized by the Associazione Palio San Nicola Sirolo, the Palio is more than just a re-enactment: it is the moment when the entire community of the Municipality of Sirolo relives the bond between the village, its walls, and its history. Admission is free, and the setting of the historic center, just a short walk from the beaches of Conero, makes it one of the most beloved festivals on the Ancona coast.
The XII edition of the Palio di San Nicola enlivened Sirolo on the weekend of May 9 and 10, 2026.
