The seven-district challenge in the heart of the Castelli Romani
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Palio di Colonna, also known as the Palio dei Rioni, is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Colonna, the smallest municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome, nestled between the Prenestini Mountains and the Castelli Romani in Lazio. While it is a relatively new event, it has deep roots: inaugurated in 2024, it breathes new life into a long-standing local tradition, the Palio degli Asini, which remains dear to the hearts of all residents.
Since donkeys are no longer a part of daily village life, the districts now compete in skill-based trials and popular gamesโa way to foster a sense of community belonging and pass on a piece of local identity to the younger generation. The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Colonna with the support of the local municipality and involves over one hundred participants in period costumes every year.
The heart of the Palio is the competition between the seven historic districts of Colonna, each with its own colors and local supporters:
The two-day event alternates between spectacular displays and social gatherings. It kicks off with the Palio dei Ragazzi (Youth Palio) dedicated to children, featuring traditional rural games, followed by the Cena dei Rioni (Districts' Dinner) in the town center. On Sunday, the village comes alive with a historical pageant in period attire, a performance by the Sbandieratori di Cori (flag-wavers), and the 'Lancio della Sfida' (Throwing of the Challenge), which signals the start of the district competitions: relays, wheelbarrow races, water-bucket races, and other trials that test dexterity and team spirit. The day concludes with the awarding of the winning district and a final dinner at the food stalls.
Located along the ancient Via Labicana, amidst vineyards and olive groves, Colonna is famous for its wine and the intimate atmosphere of its village. The Palio is the perfect opportunity to discover this lesser-known corner of the Castelli Romani, just a few kilometers from Rome, and to experience local traditions alongside the residents.
The Palio di Colonna is usually held in June, over the course of a weekend. The first edition took place on June 15โ16, 2024, and the second on June 14โ15, 2025.
Following the first two editions in 2024 and 2025, the Palio di Colonna is expected again in 2026, as usual in the month of June, in the historic center of Colonna, in the Castelli Romani. The event is expected to feature the well-established format: the Youth Palio, the Districts' Dinner, the historical pageant with flag-wavers, and the challenge between the seven districts with traditional skill games.
Official dates and the full program have not yet been published by the organizers. This page will be updated as soon as the Pro Loco Colonna announces the 2026 calendar.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Based on previous editions, the event will span two days, featuring the Youth Palio, the Districts' Dinner, the historical pageant, the performance by the Sbandieratori di Cori, the 'Lancio della Sfida', and the competitions between the seven districts. Details regarding times and appointments will be announced by the Pro Loco Colonna in the weeks leading up to the event.
Colonna is located in the Castelli Romani, about 30 km southeast of Rome. By car, it can be reached via the A1 motorway (Monte Porzio Catone exit) or along the Via Casilina (SS6). By train, stations on the Rome-Cassino line are nearby, requiring a short final journey by car or bus.
The event takes place in the historic center and town squares and is free to attend. The Districts' Dinner and food stalls are paid services based on the menus offered by the Pro Loco.
The historic center is characterized by narrow alleys and slopes: comfortable shoes are recommended. Given the small size of the village, it is advisable to arrive early for the historical pageant and to find parking in areas outside the center.
