The historic bareback horse race between the twelve districts of Fucecchio
The Palio delle Contrade City of Fucecchio is the most iconic event in the town of Fucecchio, in the province of Florence, Tuscany. Every year, on the last Sunday of May, the twelve districts (contrade) compete in a bareback horse race that draws thousands of spectators, representing the climax of weeks of preparation, neighborhood dinners, and popular fervor.
The event has its roots in a medieval dispute that took place in Fucecchio around the 13th century. However, the modern Palio was born in 1980, when the Fratres blood donor group organized a pony race to promote blood donation. Given its success, it was decided the following year to create a proper Palio delle Contrade with horses, first saddled and later ridden bareback. Since then, the joust has grown to become one of the most important historical re-enactments in Tuscany.
The heart of the Palio lies in its districts, each with its own colors, headquarters, and history of victories:
On the morning of the Palio, starting at 9:30 AM, the streets of Fucecchio's center fill with color for the historical pageant: around 1,200 participants in magnificent costumes parade, representing significant moments in the town's history, district by district. The procession is closed by a group of representatives, one for each district, accompanying the Cencio, the painted banner awarded to the winner of the afternoon race.
In the afternoon, around 3:00 PM, the action moves to the green area of the Buca del Palio, where a circular sand track is set up. The competition consists of three races: two heats of six horses and a final of eight, reserved for the top four finishers of each heat. The excitement reaches its peak when the winning district claims the Cencio amidst the cheering of its supporters.
More than just a race, the Fucecchio Palio is a moment of strong community cohesion that enlivens the entire town for weeks, with side events such as the "Palio in Gioco" dedicated to children and the district markets. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to discover the authentic Tuscan soul of the lower Valdarno, blending history, gastronomy, and a passion for the districts passed down from generation to generation.
The 45th edition of the Palio delle Contrade City of Fucecchio took place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, preceded by a week of events including the "Palio in Gioco" on May 17 and the inauguration of a statue dedicated to the Palio in the town square.
The historical pageant enlivened the center from 9:30 AM with around 1,200 costumed participants. In the afternoon, at 3:00 PM, the race at the Buca del Palio was held, consisting of two heats and a final.
The Sant'Andrea district won the Cencio, with jockey Giovanni Atzeni riding Communiqué, consolidating its lead in the event's hall of fame.
Fucecchio is located in the lower Valdarno, in the province of Florence. By car, it is reachable via the FI-PI-LI highway (Fucecchio exit). By train, the reference station is San Miniato-Fucecchio, on the Florence-Pisa line, connected to the town center by a bus service.
Access to the Buca del Palio for the race requires a ticket. In advance: grandstand approximately 40 euros, lawn approximately 20 euros; on the day of the event, prices rise to approximately 50 and 25 euros respectively. The morning historical pageant along the city streets is free.
We recommend arriving in the morning to watch the historical pageant and purchasing tickets for the race in advance, as they are in high demand.
