A palio played on the sand

There are palios held on horseback, others played with crossbows or on boats. In Fiumicino, on the coast of the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region, the palio is run barefoot on the sand. The Palio del Mare was born in June 2026 with a simple and surprisingly effective idea: take the beach games that generations of Italians have played on holiday, give them a proper competitive structure with teams, scoring, and a final awards ceremony, and turn them into a town festival.

Eleven events, one beach

The competition field is the stretch of beach on the Lungomare della Salute, near number 51. Here, teams face off in eleven events designed to require neither training nor technical equipment, but only team spirit and a willingness to get involved:

• Tug-of-war and Capture the Flag, the two absolute classics of the repertoire
• Bucket race and sack race
• Water balloon dodgeball, the wet and summery version of the schoolyard game
• Ring toss, slipper throwing, and darts
• Bocce and marbles on the sand
• Sandcastle building, the only event where imagination counts more than speed

The alternation between tests of strength, dexterity, and pure creativity ensures that no team is truly favored: those who lose the tug-of-war can make up for it with marbles or a well-built castle.

The rule that changes everything: mixed and inclusive teams

The true hallmark of the Palio del Mare lies in its team composition rules. Each squad must field four men, four women, and two individuals from vulnerable categories. This is not just a symbolic clause: it means that every team, to compete, must build itself around the diversity of its members and find the right event for everyone. The competition thus becomes a mechanism for integration rather than selection, and the beach a place where different abilities all find their space.

Who is behind it

The initiative is promoted by the Evoluzione Comune association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Fiumicino, and is part of the summer event calendar that the administration has progressively extended to the entire municipal territory, from the center to the coastal districts. Councilor Stefano Costa, present at the first edition, commented on the day by highlighting how beautiful it was to see so many people get involved and experience the beach as a natural playground, with the hope that the Palio del Mare can become a fixed and increasingly anticipated appointment of the Fiumicino summer.

Fiumicino is not just the gateway to the capital. It is a seaside town with an ancient maritime tradition, a fishing port at the mouth of the Tiber, seafood restaurants that attract Romans on weekends, and a long coastline that stretches from Focene to Passoscuro and Fregene. An event like the Palio del Mare tells this second identity well: that of a coastal community that enjoys the beach all year round, not just during the holiday months. For those arriving from Rome or further afield, attending the palio is also a different way to discover the Lazio coast, far from the most beaten tourist paths.

How to participate

Participation is by pre-formed teams, with limited spots and registration to be communicated in advance to the organizers. Those not competing can follow the events freely from the beach: the public is an integral part of the day, especially during the tug-of-war and the final awards.
