Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival (Marina di Minturno)

A festival of sea and faith in the Gulf of Gaeta

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is the most heartfelt devotional event in Marina di Minturno, the coastal district of the town of Minturno, located in the province of Latina at the southern tip of Lazio. Here, where the Garigliano plain meets the Gulf of Gaeta, the liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, celebrated on July 16th, becomes a time of community that unites residents, local families, and the many vacationers who flock to the coast in the heart of summer.

The festivities are organized by the Parish of San Biagio Vescovo e Martire, the religious and social hub of the Marina. Established in the post-war period in a territory marked by wartime destruction and rapid urban growth along the coast, the current church dedicated to Saint Blaise was completed in the 1960s and has since become the heart of the district's major events. It is no surprise, therefore, that the Carmel festival here has an intimate yet popular character, quite distinct from typical tourist-oriented festivals.

The spiritual journey leading to the feast

The days preceding July 16th are marked by a path of preparation that the community follows with dedication: recitation of the Rosary, Eucharistic adoration, evening celebrations, and, on one of the evenings, the Anointing of the Sick, a moment particularly attended by the parish's elderly. Masses are generally held in the late afternoon or early evening, when the coastal heat subsides and people head out.

The liturgical climax arrives with the solemn mass on the day of the feast, followed immediately by the procession toward the sea: the statue of the Madonna leaves the church, crosses the streets of the district, and reaches the promenade, accompanied by the glow of candles and the notes of the local brass band. Upon returning to the church, the traditional Chant of the Twelve Stars resonates, the gesture that truly concludes the day of celebration for the people of Minturno.

The final Sunday with the Archbishop

The festival does not end on the liturgical day. On the Sunday following July 16th, the community gathers for the closing celebration, presided over by the Archbishop of Gaeta, Monsignor Luigi Vari, followed by a second procession through the parish streets. It is the moment when the Marina shows itself in full: families on balconies, shops open, and tourists joining the procession along the roads leading to the beach.

A few kilometers from the Marina, you can climb to the historic village of Minturno, with its baronial castle and medieval alleys overlooking the gulf, while in the plains you can visit the archaeological site of Minturnae, with its Roman theater, aqueduct, and forum: a site that also hosts its own season of performances in summer. The Scauri coastline completes the seaside offer, with sandy beaches and the Monte d'Oro promontory. The local gastronomy, with strong maritime and rural roots, features tiella gaetana, fresh gulf fish, and oil from the Aurunci hills.

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival remains, above all, a neighborhood feast: those who experience it understand how, on the Pontine coast, Marian devotion and the daily relationship with the sea have been one and the same for generations.
