About Open Treasures

Tesori Aperti is the weekend when Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole, in the heart of Romagna Forlivese, throws open the doors of twelve historical sites normally closed to the public: churches, towers, fortresses, praetorian palaces, and archives that tell centuries of history. Between guided tours, medieval and Renaissance re-enactments, exhibitions, concerts, and the heartfelt Festival of the Madonna dei Fiori, it's an opportunity to rediscover the identity of a border village between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States.

A Journey Through Romagna's Hidden Treasures

Tesori Aperti – Luoghi, Memorie, Identità (Open Treasures – Places, Memories, Identities) is the event that every spring transforms the Municipality of Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole, in the province of Forlì-Cesena (Emilia-Romagna), into a large open-air museum. For an entire weekend, twelve historical sites normally not open to visitors are opened to the public, from the oldest churches to the towers and fortresses that have made this village a strategic crossroads since the Middle Ages.

Why Castrocaro and Terra del Sole Are Special

The territory tells two complementary stories. Castrocaro, with its imposing Fortress perched on a rocky spur, was a long-standing Florentine outpost on the border with the Papal States. Terra del Sole, a short distance away, is a rare Renaissance-founded fortress-city commissioned by the Medici in the 16th century: an almost unique example of ideal military urban planning, with its squares, ramparts, and palaces of power still perfectly legible.

What to Visit

The event allows access to places that remain closed all year round:

  • Church of San Giovanni della Murata and Bell Tower
  • Courtyard of the Fortress with Guelfa Tower and Church of Santa Barbara
  • Churches of San Nicolò, dei Caduti, and San Rocco
  • Parish Church of Santa Reparata and Festival Pavilion
  • Praetorian Palace of Terra del Sole and the Historical Archive
  • Governor's Castle of Piazza with Porta Romana and Captain of Artillery's Castle with Porta Fiorentina

Not Just Monuments

Tesori Aperti intertwines history and popular festival. The event takes place concurrently with the Festival of the Madonna dei Fiori (Festival of the Madonna of the Flowers), a deeply felt occasion for the community that commemorates the Marian protection invoked during an ancient plague epidemic. The program alternates guided tours, historical re-enactments in costume with military companies, educational exhibitions on weapons and armor, concerts, nature excursions, and the large flower exhibition-market that colors the streets of the town.

Who Is It For

It is an event suitable for families, history and art enthusiasts, walkers, and the curious who want to discover an authentic corner of Romagna away from the most beaten tourist routes. A single ticket grants access to all sites for the entire day, accompanied by a map to create your own itinerary through the memories of Castrocaro and Terra del Sole.

Open Treasures — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Tesori Aperti took place on Saturday, April 11th and Sunday, April 12th in Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole, with the extraordinary opening of twelve historical sites, costume re-enactments, exhibitions, concerts, and excursions, coinciding with the traditional Festival of the Madonna dei Fiori.

The 2026 edition confirmed the event's winning formula: two days packed with events between Castrocaro Terme and the fortress-city of Terra del Sole, in the province of Forlì-Cesena. The opening of the twelve treasures, guided tours, historical re-enactments, and the popular festival of the Madonna dei Fiori animated the center, accompanied by the large floral exhibition-market.
