The Open Derive – Giacomo Taravella Memorial is one of the most cherished regattas on the Lake Maggiore sailing calendar. It takes place in Belgirate, a charming town in the Vergante area overlooking the Verbano, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the heart of the Piedmontese lake district. The event opens its race course to dinghies of all classes (the "all-dinghy" formula), bringing together owners, helmsmen, and light sailing enthusiasts for a single day of competition on the water.

The Giacomo Taravella Memorial is one of the stages of the Verbano Dinghy Championship, a circuit that visits various locations around the lake throughout the season—from Monvalle to Verbania, Lesa to Maccagno, and Caldé to Cerro di Laveno, as well as Belgirate. The regatta is organized by the sailing clubs of the Verbano in partnership with the Società delle Regate 1858, the historic sailing association based in Via Mazzini, Belgirate, which has been active since 1858 and is among the oldest in Italy.
A memorial on the water
The race is held in memory of Giacomo Taravella and serves as a gathering point for the lake's sailing community. Beyond the competition, the day is an opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of Belgirate and the Vergante, with its historic villas, lakeside promenade, and the stunning views of Lake Maggiore with the Borromean Islands in the background.

L'edizione 2026 dell'Open Derive – Memorial Giacomo Taravella si corre domenica 12 luglio 2026 sullo specchio d'acqua di Belgirate (Lago Maggiore). È una delle prove del Campionato del Verbano Derive, il circuito che nel 2026 prevede tappe ad aprile, maggio, giugno, luglio, agosto, settembre e ottobre in diverse località del lago.
La regata è aperta alle derive di tutte le classi. Le prove si svolgono sul campo di regata davanti a Belgirate, con partenze e percorso definiti dal comitato di regata in base alle condizioni di vento del lago.

Getting there
Belgirate can be reached by car via the A26 motorway (take the lake district exits towards Gravellona Toce), from Milan via the A8/A26, or from Turin via the A4/A26. By train, the Belgirate station is on the Simplon line; Stresa and Arona are the main nearby hubs.
Venue
The race course is set up on the water directly in front of Belgirate. The Società delle Regate 1858 is located at Via Mazzini 2.
