The traditional May Day agricultural and pastoral fair in the village of Nocciano
The Nocciano May Fair is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Abruzzo's folk traditions. Every May 1st, the small village of Nocciano, nestled in the hilly hinterland of the Province of Pescara, Abruzzo, comes alive from morning until night with a large exhibition and market dedicated to the agricultural and pastoral world. Established in the early 2000s as a re-enactment of peasant life, the event has grown with each edition to become a defining celebration for the entire Nocciano community, attracting thousands of visitors from across Abruzzo and neighboring regions.
The most anticipated and symbolic moment is the parade of the cart pulled by white oxen. Adorned with red and green garlands and guided by a young man standing tall, proud as an ancient charioteer, the animals traverse the historic center on a cart hand-painted with floral and rural motifs. It is a tribute to the animals of the agricultural civilization—the silent companions of field labor—and a gesture of ancient, almost ritualistic gratitude for the coming harvests. The entire day of festivities revolves around this symbolic core.
The fair spreads through the village's alleys and squares, with over one hundred agricultural businesses exhibiting machinery, equipment, and livestock: cattle, sheep, and horses. There is no shortage of food and wine stalls featuring local flavors, alongside craft and textile stands. The program traditionally includes:
Organized by the cultural association NoccianOver with the patronage of the Municipality of Nocciano and the Province of Pescara, the May Fair involves the local Pro Loco, social clubs, schools, and town volunteers. Exhibitors and visitors arrive from as far as the Marche, Molise, Lazio, Puglia, and Umbria regions, a testament to the supra-regional appeal of a festival that successfully blends the memory of the rural world, village conviviality, and the promotion of Nocciano's heritage.
The 2026 May Fair was held as per tradition on May 1st in the historic center of Nocciano, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, organized by the cultural association NoccianOver with the patronage of the Municipality of Nocciano and the Province of Pescara.
The heart of the day was the parade of the cart pulled by white oxen and the exhibition-market with over a hundred agricultural businesses, livestock, food stalls, and craft stands. In the De Sterlich-Aliprandi Castle, the contemporary art exhibition "Alla luce di nuovo" by artist Gelsomina Rasetta was set up, open until the day of the fair, crowning a program that combined rural tradition and culture.
Every year on May 1st, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, in the historic center of Nocciano (PE).
By car: Nocciano can be reached from the A25 motorway (Alanno-Scafa or Pescara-Chieti exits), continuing along the provincial roads of the Pescara hinterland. The nearest train station is Pescara, from where you can continue by car inland.
Access to the fair is free. It is recommended to park in the designated areas on the outskirts of the village and proceed on foot.
