The Viennese tradition of Strauss in the heart of the Sabina hills
On the first day of the year, the village of Fara in Sabina, in the province of Rieti, welcomes the new year with the New Year's Grand Concert, an outstanding event that blends music, history, and landscape in the heart of the Sabina region. The setting is the solemn Cathedral of Sant'Antonino Martire, the Collegiate Church that dominates the historic center, where the public gathers to celebrate the start of the year to the notes of the great Viennese tradition.
The star of the evening is the Vincenzo Bellini Orchestra of Rome, led by Maestro Lorenzo Lupi, an ensemble that has accompanied the prestigious Viennese Debutante Ball in the capital for years. The program recreates the magic of the famous Vienna New Year's Concert, featuring the waltzes, polkas, and marches that made Johann Strauss immortal. The most recent edition paid tribute to the bicentenary of the birth of the "Waltz King," a figure who dominated the European musical scene for much of the 19th century.
The concert is promoted by the APS Pueri Symphonici association, long committed to spreading musical culture among new generations, in collaboration with the Municipality of Fara in Sabina and the local Pro Loco. The initiative is part of the "Christmas in the Villages" project, supported by the Lazio Region as part of funds for the promotion and enhancement of local territories, which has been renewed for Fara in Sabina for the third consecutive year.
The New Year's Grand Concert is much more than a musical event: it is an opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages in the Rieti province. Before or after the concert, visitors can stroll through the medieval alleys, admire the Renaissance palaces, and visit the Civic Archaeological Museum, which houses the famous Sabina Chariot. A few kilometers away stands the Farfa Abbey, one of the most important monastic complexes in Europe, an ideal destination to complete the day.
Admission to the concert is free subject to availability. The event is traditionally held on January 1st in the late afternoon, offering residents and visitors an elegant and engaging way to start the year with great music, in a village that makes culture and hospitality its hallmarks.
