The Neapolitan nativity scene on display in the ancient cathedral of Vico Equense
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Neapolitan Nativity Scene Exhibition in Vico Equense, in the province of Naples, is one of the most iconic Christmas events on the Sorrento Peninsula. The exhibition is held in the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, the ancient cathedral that stands on a rocky spur overlooking the sea in the heart of the historic center: an extraordinary venue in itself, built in the 14th century and remaining the bishop's seat until 1818, which welcomes the works of master nativity makers every winter.
The exhibition route is built around glass cases that protect and enhance every single scene. In recent editions, over thirty works of the Neapolitan nativity tradition have been exhibited, distributed in seventeen cases, while the most recent edition brought the work of about forty exhibitors to the Annunziata. Visitors will encounter, above all:
This is not just a simple display of objects: each case tells a story of a craft, that of the master nativity maker, made of modeling, painting, miniature tailoring, and knowledge of iconographic tradition.
The exhibition is organized by the Friends of the Nativity Scene of Vico Equense association, founded in 2017 with the goal of promoting the art and culture of Christmas traditions. The group, led by Umberto Di Martino, has its roots in the experience of “Pastori in cammino” (Shepherds on the Move), the initiative conceived at Punta Mare that preceded the current exhibition. The association works in collaboration with the Municipality of Vico Equense and the local parish, and has always insisted on a precise mission: to pass on to younger generations a craft heritage that risks being lost otherwise.
One of the distinctive features of the exhibition is its geography: alongside the local nativity makers from Vico, artisans arrive from Naples, San Giorgio a Cremano, Torre del Greco, Torre Annunziata, and the entire Sorrento Peninsula, with prominent figures from the Campanian nativity scene landscape. It is a rare opportunity to compare different styles, materials, and schools within a single route, and to speak directly with those who create the works.
The exhibition traditionally opens around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception or mid-December and remains open until Epiphany or the first days thereafter, with double morning and afternoon opening hours. Admission is free, making it a natural stop for families and those spending their Christmas holidays on the coast. The precise dates and times are announced each year by the organizers in the weeks preceding the opening.
Vico Equense is the first town on the Sorrento Peninsula when coming from Castellammare di Stabia, suspended between the Gulf of Naples and the Lattari Mountains, in Campania. The Christmas period is particularly lively: in addition to the street lights and the initiatives of local associations, there are concerts of traditional Neapolitan music and the gastronomic appeal that has made the city famous, from pizza by the meter to holiday sweets. Visiting the Neapolitan Nativity Scene Exhibition therefore means fitting into a wider itinerary, made of historic churches, sea views, and local cuisine.
The Neapolitan nativity scene has been recognized as one of the most original artistic languages of Southern Italy: a miniature popular theater where the sacred coexists with daily life, with workshops, innkeepers, and markets. In Vico Equense, this language is shown without museum filters, in a church that is a monument itself, and with the authors often present in the room. For enthusiasts, it is a fixed appointment; for those approaching this tradition for the first time, it is perhaps the best way to understand it.
At the moment, the organizers have not yet released the calendar for the 2026 Neapolitan Nativity Scene Exhibition in Vico Equense. The reference remains the previous edition, hosted in the Church of the Santissima Annunziata from December 13, 2025, to January 10, 2026, with free admission.
As per custom, the exhibition is curated by the Friends of the Nativity Scene of Vico Equense association together with the Municipality of Vico Equense, in the province of Naples, and showcases the works of master nativity makers from the Sorrento Peninsula, Naples, and the Vesuvius area inside glass display cases.
The information on this page will be updated as soon as the official dates and the program for the 2026 edition are published.
