Illuminations, artisan markets, the Elf Factory, and a living nativity scene in the heart of Cilento
Every year, from December 6th until Epiphany, the town of Agropoli, in the province of Salerno, dresses up for the Natale delle Meraviglie, the Christmas program promoted by the municipal administration alongside parishes, local associations, and businesses. It is the city's most anticipated winter event and one of the richest in the entire Cilento region: for a month, squares, alleys, and hamlets are filled with lights, music, crafts, and entertainment for children.
The festivities kick off with the lighting of the illuminations in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, a highly anticipated moment that gathers hundreds of people around the tree, accompanied by music and the arrival of Santa Claus and his elves. From that moment on, the city center remains illuminated and lively until January 6th, when the Befana officially closes the event by touring the city streets.
The heart of the festival is the artisan markets, which stretch from Piazza della Repubblica to Via Filippo Patella, passing through Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Corso Garibaldi, and the staircases leading up to the old town. The wooden stalls feature:
Strolling through the stalls is free and pairs perfectly with a visit to the historic center, which is particularly charming during this period.
Among the most beloved attractions for families is Santa's Elf Factory, set up in the ยซGiovanni Paolo IIยป Oratory Hall in Piazza della Repubblica. Inside, children follow an immersive itinerary featuring the North Pole route, a magic library, a post office to drop off letters, a candy factory, and a toy workshop, leading up to Santa's office, where they can meet him. Visitors are accompanied by costumed elves.
Nearby, outdoors, an ice skating rink is installed, one of the new features that has made Christmas in Agropoli even more attractive for teenagers and adults in recent years.
In the old town, at the foot of the Angevin-Aragonese castle, the San Francesco living nativity scene comes to life, a re-enactment that brings the trades, workshops, and scenes of the nativity back to the alleys and staircases of the historic center. It is the most traditional soul of the event, curated by parishes and local associations, and complements the concerts and exhibitions hosted in the churches of the city and its hamlets.
The highlight of the program is the New Year's Eve party in the square, which in Agropoli is celebrated on the evening of January 1st in Piazza Vittorio Veneto with the format 'One Night One - Live and Dance Experience. The New Year of Cilento': live music, DJ sets, vocalists, and local dance schools, with free admission. It is an event that attracts audiences from the entire coastline and the inland valleys of Cilento.
Overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, Agropoli is considered the northern gateway to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Its historic center perched on the promontory, with its castle and scenic staircase, offers an intimate and authentic atmosphere in winter, very different from the summer crowds. The Natale delle Meraviglie is therefore also an excellent opportunity to discover Campania off-season, combining the party in the square with a visit to the temples of Paestum, Castellabate, or the hills of the Cilento hinterland.
The Natale delle Meraviglie 2025-2026 kicked off on Saturday, December 6, 2025: at 6:00 PM, in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the lighting of the illuminations and the tree with Santa Claus and the elves, and at 6:30 PM the opening of the artisan markets between Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The stalls remained set up until January 6, 2026, extending along Via Filippo Patella, Corso Garibaldi, and the staircases of the historic center.
The great novelty of the edition was Santa's Elf Factory, inaugurated on December 9th in the 'Giovanni Paolo II' Oratory Hall in Piazza della Repubblica: North Pole route, magic library, post office for letters, candy and toy factory, with costumed elves accompanying visitors. In the first three days of opening, it already recorded hundreds of visits. Outside, the ice skating rink completed the offer for families and teenagers.
The program also involved the hamlets, with concerts and exhibitions in the churches, street entertainment, the Disney character parade every Sunday morning, and the San Francesco living nativity scene in the old town. The grand finale arrived on the evening of January 1, 2026, in Piazza Vittorio Veneto with 'One Night One - Live and Dance Experience. The New Year of Cilento', while on January 6th, the Befana closed the festivities by touring the city. The event was promoted by the administration led by Mayor Roberto Mutalipassi with the Councilor for Events Roberto Apicella.
