Music Warriors: masterclasses and concerts in the historic center of Fondi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Muwa is short for Music Warriors, a project by the MelaViola cultural association dedicated to the training and growth of musicians through individual study, ensemble practice, and stage experience. Rather than a festival built around big-name headliners, it is a temporary community of students and teachers that transforms the Municipality of Fondi, in southern Lazio, into an open-air musical laboratory for a week. Daytime lessons culminate each evening in concerts open to the city: this is the formula that has made Muwa one of the most appreciated events of the Fondi summer.
The project was born in 2017 at the evocative Baronial Castle of Maenza, a medieval village in the province of Latina, where the first editions were held until 2019, featuring masterclasses, recitals, and concerts. After the forced break in 2020-2021 due to the pandemic, activities resumed in the summer of 2022 in Bassiano, another municipality in the province awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. Since 2023, the fifth edition moved to Fondi, a city that combines fascinating historical heritage with a strong tourist vocation: the festival has remained there ever since.
The heart of the event is the historic center of Fondi, one of the best-preserved in southern Lazio, still enclosed within its Roman-era grid layout. The evenings are distributed across high-value spaces:
The proximity between the venues allows the public to walk from one event to another, crossing alleys and small squares that remain lively until late at night in August.
The educational component includes masterclasses of varying duration, organized by instrumental families: strings, woodwinds, percussion, piano, voice, and jazz, as well as optional ensemble music courses. The teachers, musicians active on the national and international concert scene, guide the students during lessons and evaluate their progress: the best are selected to perform in the public concerts of the week, which represent both a moment of assessment and a gift back to the city. Registration opens in the spring and usually closes at the end of June; all information is available on the official festival website.
The Muwa Festival is part of the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Fondi, which every year brings together dozens of associations and events under the name Estatissima, from the International Folklore Festival to the Fondi Film Festival. Muwa brings its own specificity: high-quality, demanding music, offered for free or at low cost in places that are a discovery in themselves. For those spending their holidays between Lake Fondi, the citrus plains, and the beaches of the Gulf of Gaeta, it is an opportunity to discover a less touristy and more intimate side of this corner of Lazio.
Evening concerts generally begin around 9:30 PM, when the temperature becomes more pleasant. It is advisable to arrive early: the interior spaces of Palazzo Caetani and the Jewish Museum have limited capacity and seats are not always bookable. It is worth combining the music with a walk through the historic center and a food and wine stop: Fondi is known for its citrus fruits, the buffalo mozzarella from the plain, and the extra virgin olive oil from the Ausoni Mountains.
The Muwa Festival 2026 does not yet have an official calendar. Based on previous editions, the event is traditionally scheduled for the second half of August, with a week of advanced music masterclasses and evening concerts in the spaces of the historic center of Fondi, in the province of Latina.
Those wishing to participate in the courses can monitor the official website and social media channels of the MelaViola cultural association: in past editions, registration opened in the spring and closed at the end of June. The program of concerts open to the public is usually released together with the summer calendar of the Municipality of Fondi.
By car: Take the Fondi exit on the Via Appia (SS7), which connects Terracina to Formia; about 120 km from Rome, about 130 km from Naples. By train: Fondi-Sperlonga station on the Rome-Naples line via Formia, connected to the center by local bus service. By plane: Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, or Naples Capodichino.
Evening concerts are generally free or by voluntary donation; registration for masterclasses is fee-based and must be completed by the deadlines indicated on the official website.
Fondi has accommodation facilities in the center and along the coast; excellent alternatives are Sperlonga, Terracina, and Gaeta, all less than thirty minutes away by car. In August, it is essential to book well in advance.
