Summer solstice music in the heart of Altamura
The Music Festival is a grand celebration that, every June 21st, coincides with the summer solstice, transforming squares, courtyards, and gardens across Europe into vibrant, open-air stages. Originally conceived as a European day dedicated to those who make and love music, it is promoted in Italy as a national event involving hundreds of cities, both large and small. In Altamura, in the Province of Bari, the organization is managed by the local Pro Loco (ATA Pro Loco Altamura APS), which curates a program of concerts held in the most evocative corners of the Murgia historic center each year.
The spirit of the event is one of participation and accessibility: it is not a large ticketed event, but a network of gatherings that highlight urban spaces and the bond between music and the community. In Altamura, the festival is deeply connected to the identity of this Murgia city, famous for its Frederickian cathedral, DOP bread, and the prehistoric site of the Altamura Man. Music thus becomes a way to rediscover courtyards, atriums, and green areas, returning them to the citizens for an evening at the start of summer.
The Altamura program favors live music in all its forms: from brass band repertoires to solo recitals, and from classical music to contemporary sounds. Over the years, the stage has featured guitarists, wind ensembles, and marching bands, with performances designed for both dedicated enthusiasts and those simply looking for a pleasant summer evening outdoors. Admission to all events is free of charge, in keeping with the philosophy of the Music Festival.
The Altamura Music Festival is part of the wider Apulian calendar for the event, confirming the cultural vocation of a territory that blends historical heritage with musical vitality.
The 32nd edition of the Music Festival brought Altamura to life on Sunday, June 21, 2026, following the national theme 'The Voice of Places'. The Pro Loco of Altamura organized a series of free events in iconic spaces of the Murgia city, confirming the widespread and participatory formula that characterizes the event.
Among the offerings were a journey dedicated to the saxophone and its repertoire and an open-air brass band concert, making for an early summer evening filled with live music and community connection.
