A night to experience Rome's museums for just one euro, featuring concerts, exhibitions, and performances.
Museum Night is the annual event that opens the doors of the capital's cultural landmarks well beyond their usual hours. Promoted by the Municipality of Rome (Roma Capitale) through the Capitoline Superintendence for Cultural Heritage and organized by Zètema Progetto Cultura, the event is part of the broader European Museum Night calendar. It turns the city into a vast nocturnal itinerary, stretching from the heart of the Campidoglio to local neighborhood museums.
The event's hallmark is accessibility: for this night only, admission to the Civic Museums costs one euro for residents of Rome and the Metropolitan City, and two euros for non-residents, while it remains free for Roma MIC Card holders. Venues stay open until 2:00 AM, with last entry at 1:00 AM, offering the chance to experience permanent collections and temporary exhibitions in an unusual and evocative atmosphere, far from the daytime crowds.
Beyond the Civic Museums, which form the core of the event, dozens of other institutions participate each year: universities, Italian and foreign academies, embassies, cultural institutes, and official venues. The program spans concerts—ranging from classical and pop to jazz, electronic, and ethnic music—as well as exhibitions, guided tours, performances of dance and theater, workshops, and screenings, spread across a network that covers the entire urban area.
Born as the Roman branch of the European Museum Night, the event has become one of the capital's most popular cultural highlights, drawing tens of thousands of visitors in a single evening. For Rome, the capital of the Lazio region, it is a key opportunity to showcase its artistic and archaeological heritage while engaging a broad and diverse audience, including families and younger generations. The combination of a symbolic price, late-night access, and a rich program makes it a defining fixture of the Roman cultural calendar.
The 2026 edition was held on Saturday, May 23, from 8:00 PM Saturday until 2:00 AM Sunday, May 24, with last entry at 1:00 AM. 70 cultural spaces in the capital—museums, universities, Italian and foreign academies, embassies, and institutes—participated, hosting a total of about 150 initiatives. The symbolic one-euro entry fee for the Civic Museums was confirmed for residents of Rome and the Metropolitan City, with two euros for non-residents and free access for Roma MIC Card holders.
The evening was inaugurated at 7:30 PM in Piazza del Campidoglio by a concert from the Rome Capital Local Police Band. The Civic Museums formed the core of the event, hosting the highest concentration of activities.
The heart of the event is Piazza del Campidoglio, reachable on foot from the historic center. By metro, use the Colosseo (Line B) or Cavour stops, followed by a short walk; numerous bus lines serve the Fori and Piazza Venezia area. Using public transport is highly recommended due to the evening crowds and traffic restrictions in the city center.
Open from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM (last entry at 1:00 AM). Admission to Civic Museums is 1 euro for residents of Rome and the Metropolitan City, 2 euros for non-residents, and free with the Roma MIC Card. Many participating venues (universities, academies, institutes) offer free admission. For the updated program: museiincomuneroma.it, or call the single number 060608 (daily 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM).
It is best to plan an itinerary in advance covering a few nearby venues to avoid queues and excessive travel. Performances and concerts have fixed schedules: be sure to check the times on the official website.
