The oldest and most famous carnival in Friuli Venezia Giulia, featuring allegorical floats and historical groups
The Muggia Carnival โ the Carneval de Muja in the local dialect โ is much more than a festival: it is the soul of a community. Founded in 1954, it is the most famous historical carnival in Friuli Venezia Giulia and one of the most cherished in the entire Northeast, capable of transforming the Venetian town on the Gulf of Trieste into a grand open-air stage for days.
The absolute protagonists are the eight historical groups โ Bellezze Naturali, Brivido, Trottola, Bulli e Pupe, La Bora, Ongia, Mandrioi, and Lampo โ who work for months each year to build allegorical floats and prepare themes, choreography, and costumes. The friendly rivalry between the groups, united in the Association of Carnival Groups, is the driving force behind an event entirely built by artisans and volunteers.
The highlight is the grand parade on Sunday: over 2000 participants, about thirty floats with ingenious mechanisms, and numerous marching bands parade through the streets of the historic centre, creating a true open-air theatre with free admission. Afterwards, awards are given to the winning group, in a competition that captivates the citizens and the many visitors from all over the region each year.
The only Italian municipality in Istria remaining north of the border, Muggia (Province of Trieste) retains a historic centre with a clear Venetian influence, featuring the cathedral, the castle, and the small harbour. The Carnival enhances its Mediterranean and Central European identity, offering days of colour, music, and joy in the heart of winter.
The 72nd Muggia Carnival takes place from February 12 to 20, 2026. The highlight of the event is the grand parade on Sunday, February 15, starting at 1 PM, with the eight historical groups, over 2000 participants, 9 marching bands, and about thirty allegorical floats equipped with ingenious mechanical systems. The parade, with free admission, is followed by awards for the masks and groups.
