Underground rock in the Oira quarry, Val d'Ossola
The Mountain Sound Festival is one of the most original events in the Piedmontese musical summer. It takes place in Oira, a hamlet of the municipality of Crevoladossola, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, inside a former granite quarry converted into a natural performance space: Tones Teatro Natura. The high stone walls of the Val d'Ossola act as a resonance chamber and scenic backdrop for an event that has made musical research its hallmark.
The festival represents the most underground and rebellious soul of the Tones Teatro Natura season. The artistic lineup spans the most experimental genres of the contemporary rock scene: psychedelia, kraut-rock, shoegaze, post-punk, industrial, and electronic experimentation. Each edition features Italian and European acts, alternating cult names from the international scene with emerging artists in a rare balance between curatorial rigor and a desire for discovery.
The project was born in 2020 on the initiative of the members of the Guided By Dave (GBYD) association, an Ossola-based collective dedicated to organizing cultural and recreational events in the area. The first edition was held in 2022 at Alpe Lusentino, in Domobianca 365, above Domodossola; in subsequent years, the festival found its ideal home in the Oira quarry, where the collaboration with the Tones on the Stones Foundation enhanced its scenic and production dimensions.
Beyond the music, the Mountain Sound Festival is an opportunity to discover the Val d'Ossola, a borderland between Piedmont and Switzerland, made of mountains, rivers, and stone villages. Crevoladossola, with its hamlet of Oira, is located along the historic routes connecting the Po Valley to the Alpine passes. Attending the festival means combining high-quality music with the exploration of an authentic and off-the-beaten-path corner of Upper Piedmont.
The 2026 edition confirms the festival's dedication to research-driven rock, with a two-day event at Tones Teatro Natura in Oira (Crevoladossola). The lineup features bands ranging from psychedelia to kraut-rock, shoegaze to post-punk, and electronic experimentation, in a dialogue between the Italian and international scenes.
Music is accompanied by street food and craft beer; a camping area is available for the public. Detailed program and schedules on the festival's official channels.
