Masks, bean stew, and a raffle in the heart of the Biella region
The Mottalciata Carnival is one of the most cherished events in Mottalciata, a town of just over a thousand residents nestled in the plains of the Province of Biella, in the heart of Piedmont. Like in many villages across the Biella area, the Carnival here is not a spectacular tourist parade, but an authentic celebration built on community, volunteers, and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
On Carnival afternoon, the center of Mottalciata transforms into a large space for play and entertainment. It kicks off with pranks and games designed especially for children, who flood the streets in costume. The Mottalciata-Castellengo marching band then sets the rhythm for the festivities, accompanying the parade of carnival floats and masked groups through the village streets, amidst confetti, streamers, and a great spirit of togetherness.
The most awaited moment is the distribution of the fagiolata (bean stew): a hot dish of beans, a symbol of humble cooking and Piedmontese rural tradition, prepared and served to all attendees. The day concludes with the raffle drawing, which offers numerous prizes and provides the final collective thrill of the festival. In the days surrounding the Carnival, Mottalciata also hosts the famous Alpine Bean Stew, organized by the local Alpini group, another gastronomic event beloved by the town.
Participating in the Mottalciata Carnival means discovering the most genuine side of the Piedmontese Carnival, far from the crowds of large-scale events. It is the perfect opportunity for those visiting the Biella area to experience a true village festival, where the tradition of the bean stew, the music of the band, and the joy of the masks create a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, ideal for families with children.
