The winter motorcycle rally in Garfagnana, featuring open fires, grills, and local specialties
Motofüsten is one of the few motorcycle rallies that dares to brave the Apennine winter. It takes place every year at the end of February in the village of Villetta, in the municipality of San Romano in Garfagnana, province of Lucca, at the local sports facilities on Via degli Impianti Sportivi. The event is organized by the Motoporchetta group, a local collective of enthusiasts who have turned this rally into a meeting point for motorcyclists who aren't afraid of the biting mountain cold of Tuscany.
What sets Motofüsten apart from typical summer rallies is its rugged, authentic atmosphere. No glitz or grand stages here: people come to gather around the fire, share a grill, and face the cold together. Saturday is dubbed the "wild day": the organizers provide the fire and grills, while participants bring their own food to cook. A covered area with tables and benches is available, along with a bar service for drinks and hot coffee, and restroom facilities.
The rally spans two days. Saturday is dedicated to arrivals, free camping, and an informal atmosphere around the grills. Sunday is the highlight, featuring a lunch of traditional Garfagnana products prepared by the organizers, alongside games and entertainment that liven up both days. Event merchandise is available for those looking for a souvenir.
Motofüsten is open to every type of motorcycle, and both entry and on-site camping are free—a choice that underscores its grassroots and welcoming character. The setting is the evocative Garfagnana valley, nestled between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, a land of villages, fortresses, and rich culinary traditions. For motorcyclists, it is also a chance to ride the winding, scenic roads of this lesser-known corner of Tuscany, far from the most crowded tourist routes.
The rally is coordinated directly by members of the Motoporchetta group, who can be reached by phone for details on registration and the program. As this is an outdoor mountain event in February, the program may be subject to changes due to weather conditions, road status, or permits.
