About Morronese Carnival

The Morronese Carnival is one of the most deeply rooted folk festivals in the province of Caserta. Every year, in Castel Morrone, the famous Maschere di Castel Morrone—recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania—bring the village streets to life with the Quadriglia, allegorical floats, and traditional peasant performances. Organized by the Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality, it is a collective ritual that weaves together folklore, popular theater, and local identity, involving both young and old across Piazza Bronzetti, the Villa Comunale, and the ancient village streets.

The Morronese Carnival, the heart of Caserta's traditions

In the small village of Castel Morrone, nestled at the foot of Monte Castello in the province of Caserta, Carnival is more than just a costume party: it is a ritual of identity that brings the peasant and popular memory of the community to the streets every year. The Morronese Carnival is one of the most cherished events in inland Campania, capable of rallying the entire town around its masks, allegorical floats, and traditional songs.

The Maschere di Castel Morrone, Intangible Heritage of Campania

The absolute stars of the festival are the Maschere di Castel Morrone, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania. These symbolic, anthropological figures, rooted in peasant culture, bring the famous Quadriglia and traditional Morronese performances to life. Their value is such that the community has been repeatedly called upon to represent Campania beyond regional borders, showcasing a repertoire that blends dance, music, and popular theater.

A ritual that unites the village

The festival is promoted by the Pro Loco Castel Morrone with the patronage of the Municipality of Castel Morrone and the support of the local marching band. It is not merely a show, but a participatory event involving local parishes, associations, and theater companies: a way to pass down a heritage that belongs to the entire community from generation to generation.

Between Piazza Bronzetti and the historic streets

The heart of the event beats in Piazza Bronzetti and the Villa Comunale, where the allegorical floats parade, continuing through the historic Carnival streets—via delle Pietre, via Altieri, and via Torre—the stage for the final performances. Among the most characteristic elements is the float dedicated to the ancient muracche of Monte Castello, the historic walls that symbolize the Morronese landscape.

A Carnival for all ages

The Morronese Carnival is designed for families and visitors of all ages: the youngest ones kick off the festivities with their performances, while the symbolic passing of the torch between generations seals the spirit of continuity that makes this event so beloved. Those visiting Castel Morrone during these days discover an authentic piece of Campania, where tradition is still alive and shared by all.
