The village of Montombraro turns purple with scents, distillation, and gastronomy
The Montombraro Lavender Festival is one of the most evocative events of the summer in the Modenese Apennines. It takes place in Montombraro (Monteombraro), a hamlet of the Municipality of Zocca, in the Province of Modena, in Emilia-Romagna. For a weekend in July, the entire village turns purple: streets, gardens, and squares are filled with the colors and intense scent of lavender flowers, in an atmosphere that evokes Provenรงal landscapes but with all the flavor of Apennine tradition.
The heart of the event is the territory's deep connection with lavender cultivation. During the festival, there are demonstrations of mechanical harvesting and essential oil distillation, with functioning stills that allow visitors to closely follow the process from flower to essence. There are also conferences, exhibitions, and educational moments dedicated to the properties and uses of lavender, animated by local farms and schools in the area.
An integral part of the festival is the "Montombraro in viola" contest: residents decorate corners, windowsills, gardens, and create themed installations, competing for the most beautiful decoration. This widespread participation transforms the entire village into a path to be discovered on foot, where every alley holds a floral surprise.
Lavender is not just scent and color: in Montombraro, it also becomes an ingredient. The gastronomic stand offers herbal teas, decoctions, and flavored recipes, while the local cuisine brings the flavors of the Modenese Apennines. The restaurant service, available in the evening and on Sunday lunch, is managed in collaboration with the hotel school of the Spallanzani Institute, involving its students in the service.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Montombraro together with local entities, in a formula that combines territorial promotion, agriculture, gastronomy, and social interaction. The Lavender Festival is today one of the symbolic events of summer in Zocca, attracting visitors from all over the Province of Modena and beyond, drawn by the combination of nature, tradition, and Apennine hospitality.
The Montombraro Lavender Festival 2026 will take place on Saturday, July 4th, and Sunday, July 5th, 2026, in the hamlet of Zocca, along Via Serre. The dates are confirmed by the official public fair portal of the Emilia-Romagna Region, which lists the market area with approximately 25 stalls dedicated to lavender products and artisanal, agricultural, and food merchandise.
As per tradition, the weekend will feature demonstrations of harvesting and distillation, exhibitions, and conferences on lavender, the "Montombraro in viola" contest, and the gastronomic stand. The detailed program, with schedules and initiatives, will be announced by the Pro Loco of Montombraro in the weeks preceding the event.
