About Monteverde Art Festival

The Monteverde Art Festival is a free cultural event that brings the Monteverde district in Rome's Municipio XII to life every year. For two full days, the AgorArt cultural center on Via Clivo Rutario hosts a collective art exhibition, book launches, author meet-and-greets, debates, and live music. It is a participatory neighborhood event where both emerging and established artists share the same space with the public.

A neighborhood festival dedicated to art

The Monteverde Art Festival began as a local initiative and, within just a few editions, has become one of the most recognizable independent cultural events in the south-west of Rome, within the Municipio XII area. Monteverde, with its Art Nouveau buildings, grand staircases, and proximity to Villa Doria Pamphilj, is a neighborhood that has always possessed a strong civic identity: the festival is its most direct cultural expression, built from the ground up by local bookstores, independent publishers, theaters, and associations.

What happens during the festival

The format is intentionally dense and multidisciplinary. Over two days, from morning until evening, the venue hosts a collective exhibition of painting, photography, sculpture, and installations, alongside a packed calendar of book launches, meetings with writers and journalists, round-table discussions on social and urban issues, readings, performances, and concerts.

  • Collective exhibition featuring local and visiting artists
  • Book and book-album launches with the authors
  • Debates on cities, memory, and urban transformation
  • Live music and musical discussions
  • Creative workshops and activities for children and families
  • Exhibition space for independent publishing

The venues: AgorArt and Teatro Villa Pamphilj

The event has been held in various editions between the Teatro Villa Pamphilj, a historic cultural landmark of the district, and the AgorArt cultural center at Via Clivo Rutario 53, an independent space managed by the Agorร  social cooperative that hosts exhibitions, meetings, and local activities. The choice of unconventional locations is part of the festival's identity: not a closed gallery, but an open space where you can enter freely, stop to listen to a talk, and then return to the exhibition.

Who organizes it

The Monteverde Art Festival is curated by Libreria Raponi, Kulturjam edizioni, and the Teatro Villa Pamphilj, with the patronage of the Municipio XII of Rome Capital; the first editions also featured the collaboration of the KAI collective (Kollettivo Artisti Indipendenti). It is an entirely self-produced project, sustained by the voluntary work of booksellers, publishers, artists, and cultural workers from the neighborhood.

Why it's worth visiting

Visitors to Rome almost always head for the historic center, but it is in neighborhoods like Monteverde that you can truly understand how the city experiences its daily culture. The festival is free and informal: you can arrive without a reservation, follow a presentation, chat with an artist or publisher, or listen to a concert at sunset. For those living in the Lazio region, it is also an opportunity to discover Roman independent publishing, which is often invisible in commercial circuits.

The context: Monteverde and Villa Doria Pamphilj

The district sits on the Janiculum Hill, just minutes from Trastevere, and borders Villa Doria Pamphilj, the largest public park in Rome. A visit to the festival naturally combines with a stroll through the villa, the Janiculum viewpoint, and the local markets in the area: a different, slower way to experience the Capital.

Monteverde Art Festival โ€” edition 2026

The sixth edition of the Monteverde Art Festival took place on Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, at the AgorArt cultural center on Via Clivo Rutario 53 in Rome. Two days of collective exhibitions, book launches, meetings on city and society, and live music, with completely free admission and the patronage of Municipio XII.

The sixth edition

For its sixth edition, the Monteverde Art Festival returned to AgorArt, at Via Clivo Rutario 53, with a continuous program from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM on both days. The common thread remained the same as in previous editions: a collective exhibition open for the duration of the event, around which book launches, conversations, and musical moments alternated.

Saturday was dedicated primarily to afternoon meetings, with a path that touched on the memory of the seventies, urban sociology, and the transformations of Roman neighborhoods, closing with the presentation of a book-album. Sunday opened with a focus on screenwriting and continued with presentations of essays and fiction, ending with a final musical conversation.

The organization was curated by Libreria Raponi, Kulturjam edizioni, and the Teatro Villa Pamphilj, with the patronage of the Municipio XII of Rome Capital.
