Italy's oldest medieval festival returns to crown the castle of Monteriggioni
Few places in the world evoke the Middle Ages like Monteriggioni, the famous walled castle in the province of Siena whose fourteen towers were immortalized by Dante in his Inferno ("as on the round circle Monteriggion is crowned with towers"). It is from that very verse that the municipality's most important festival takes its name: "Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona", considered the oldest continuously running medieval historical re-enactment in Italy since its inception in the mid-nineties.
For the duration of the event, the entire village within the walls becomes a vast, immersive stage. Along the cobblestone streets and in the castle squares, you will find roving performers, jesters, musicians, flag-wavers, dancers, fire-eaters, and knights in costume. All around, historical encampments, ancient craft workshops, and medieval taverns come to life, offering dishes inspired by the recipes of the time.
The convivial heart of the event is the famous Medieval Banquet, which traditionally opens the festival on Thursday evening in Piazza Dante Alighieri: a themed dinner accompanied by performances, held within the castle walls for those who wish to experience the atmosphere of the era at the table.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Monteriggioni with the logistical support of the Monteriggioni AD 1213 association and the collaboration of local community groups. Since its thirtieth edition, the festival has adopted a formula more closely tied to the territory, concentrated over a long weekend with special attention to the involvement of local associations. Each year, the official poster is commissioned from a different artist to offer a fresh perspective while remaining faithful to the festival's identity.
Having grown over more than thirty years, "Monteriggioni di Torri si Corona" is now a nationally recognized event and one of the most representative medieval re-enactments in Tuscany. The unique setting of the castle, perfectly preserved and free of modern buildings within the walls, makes the experience particularly evocative: a true gateway to the Middle Ages just a few kilometers from Siena, along the Via Francigena.
The thirty-third edition confirms the four-day format. The opening is entrusted, on Thursday, July 9, to the traditional Medieval Banquet in Piazza Dante Alighieri, inside the castle. From Friday, July 10, to Sunday, July 12, the village of Monteriggioni transforms into a large, immersive stage, with performances, costumed figures, markets, historical encampments, and re-enactment activities from the afternoon until late at night. The poster for the 33rd edition is signed by artist Simone Boni.
Among the artists and companies announced for this edition: Valter Giomi, Dante Cigarini (ventriloquist), Monteriggioni Ensemble, I Giullari del Carretto, Teatro del Ramino, Le Bestie di Bacco, Saltafossum, Thierry Nadalini, and Mago Abacuc.
Monteriggioni is located in the province of Siena, along the SS2 Cassia road. By car, take the Monteriggioni exit from the Florence-Siena highway; the historic center is pedestrian-only, with parking available at the foot of the castle. By train, take the line to Castellina Scalo station, then use local connections.
Admission is at a "popular" price for the festival, with online pre-sale available. Entry is free for residents of the Municipality of Monteriggioni, children up to 10 years old, and people with disabilities. The Thursday Medieval Banquet requires separate booking and participation.
The village streets are cobblestoned: comfortable shoes are recommended. The festival animates the castle from the afternoon until late at night; fireworks are scheduled for the closing.
