A parade of floats and costumed groups in the heart of the Lepini Mountains

The Montelanico Carnival Festival is one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of this small town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. With just over two thousand residents, Montelanico lies at the foot of the Lepini Mountains at an altitude of about 300 meters, giving the event an intimate, authentic community feel, far removed from the commercial nature of larger Italian carnivals.
The Carnival here is not a spectacle to be watched from afar, but an event built over several weeks by the residents themselves. The floats are handcrafted by local associations, youth groups, and families using simple materials and plenty of creativity. This widespread participation makes the day so vibrant: those who aren't in the parade watch from their windows or join the procession along the streets.
The highlight of the festival is the grand parade of floats and costumed groups. The procession sets off from the square in front of the municipal sports field and winds through the town streets to reach Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the main square overlooked by the Town Hall. The short, pedestrian-friendly route allows the public to follow the parade up close.
In the 2025 edition, themes ranged from the Beagle Boys to Vikings, LEGO bricks, and the world of Inside Out. Costumed groups included Alice in Wonderland, The Betrothed (Promessi Sposi), and local school children, confirming how the event engages all generations.
At the end of the parade, awards are presented in the square. There are three traditional categories:
The competition remains friendly and serves primarily to celebrate the hard work of the groups, who strive to outdo themselves each year in originality and detail. Anyone can join in costume: no registration is required for the public, while floats and organized groups coordinate with the municipal representatives.
The festivities take place in the afternoon and continue into the evening with music, confetti, and a turnout that extends well beyond the local residents, drawing families from neighboring Lepini towns like Carpineto Romano, Gorga, Segni, and Gavignano. Admission is free of charge, in keeping with the tradition of local Lazio festivals.
For those unfamiliar with the area, the Carnival is a great opportunity to discover a lesser-known village: the historic center retains its medieval layout, and the surrounding area is a destination for hikers heading toward Monte Pruni and the Selva di Montelanico.
The Carnival effectively kicks off the local event season, which throughout the year includes deeply rooted traditions such as the Chestnut Festival—which reached its 63rd edition in 2025 and is organized by the Pro Loco—as well as religious feasts dedicated to the Madonna del Soccorso, Saint Michael the Archangel, and the Madonna di Collemezzo. Visitors to Montelanico during Carnival will find a community already in a festive mood, with local bars and shops open for the occasion.
As of the date of this writing, it has not been possible to find any official announcement regarding the 2026 edition of the Montelanico Carnival Festival. Neither the municipal website nor the Pro Loco channels report dates, routes, or a list of participating floats.
The event is traditionally held on a Sunday during the Carnival period, with the procession starting from the municipal sports field square and arriving at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Those intending to attend are invited to check directly with the Municipality of Montelanico (tel. +39 06 97050003) before traveling.
By car — Montelanico can be reached via the Via Casilina (SS6) or the SR609 Carpinetana, exiting the A1 at Colleferro. The town is about 55 km from Rome. On parade days, the center is closed to traffic: it is best to leave your car in the parking lots near the municipal sports field.
By train — The nearest station is Colleferro-Segni-Paliano (on the Rome Termini–Cassino line), about 10 km away, connected to Montelanico by local Cotral bus lines.
The event is free of charge. The parade usually takes place in the afternoon, starting around 2:00 PM, with celebrations continuing into the evening.
Bring confetti and costumes: dressing up is encouraged and is the best way to experience the day. The event is particularly suitable for families with children. In February and March, the weather in the Lepini Mountains can be cold and windy: dress in layers.
