Montagnola Carnival

A carnival born from the neighborhood

The Montagnola Carnival is one of the most cherished local festivals in Rome's Municipio VIII, within the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region. It does not stem from an institutional calendar or a large-scale organization; rather, it is an initiative built by the residents themselves, promoted by the Montagnola Neighborhood Committee, established in October 2017, which has chosen to bring the tradition of the neighborhood masquerade parade back to the streets since its very first edition.

The formula has remained consistent over the years: local schools, families, volunteers, the Casale Ceribelli senior center, and local merchants join forces to enliven the streets of Montagnola with costumes, colors, and music. The result is a festival with a nostalgic charm, where children are the true stars and the neighborhood reclaims its public spaces for a few hours.

The parade route

The procession kicks off from Parco Albani-Caravaggio, the traditional meeting point, and heads up Via Ambrosini before turning onto Via Leonori, Via Mario Musco, and Via Fonte Buono. The destination is Piazzale dei Caduti della Montagnola, the symbolic heart of the district, where the final festivities are concentrated: games for children, confetti, music, and the distribution of traditional seasonal sweets.

Schools in costume

Alongside the main parade, in the days leading up to the event, the Neighborhood Committee organizes masquerade outings for local preschools in collaboration with the CSAQ Casale Ceribelli. Children walk in small processions through the streets of Montagnola, accompanied by teachers, parents, and volunteers, all the way to the square. Over the years, the Poggiali Spizzichino Comprehensive Institute and local preschools have participated, with the support of local parishes and associations.

A community celebration

The Montagnola Carnival is supported by a network of local associations—including Observo APS, Orti in Movimento APS, the CSAQ Casale Ceribelli, and school parent committees—with the patronage of Municipio VIII. Local merchants contribute with decorations, snacks, and small prizes for the children in costume.

In recent editions, the parade has been dedicated to the themes of peace and integration, in keeping with the spirit of the district and other carnival celebrations in Municipio VIII, from Garbatella to San Paolo, which enliven the southern quadrant of the capital during the same period.

Those looking for a monumental carnival with massive floats will find what they are looking for elsewhere. People come to Montagnola for a different reason: to see a Roman neighborhood telling its own story, without any tourist filters. It is a precious opportunity to understand how the Italian carnival tradition continues to thrive in the districts of large cities, outside the most famous circuits, thanks to the voluntary work of its residents.

Participation is free and open to all; costumes are highly recommended—for children and adults alike—and the final square remains the natural meeting point for families and residents until late afternoon.
