Two evenings of flavor and folk music in the heart of the Sannio Beneventano
The Tripe Festival in Molinara, located in the province of Benevento, is no manufactured tourist attraction; it is the culinary heart of the early July celebrations honoring the Madonna delle Grazie. It is organized by the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee, founded in 1988 by a group of devotees who wanted to pair religious celebrations with popular community events. Since then, the committee, currently led by Antonio Spagnoletti in agreement with the parish priest Father Sergio Ingegno, has crafted an annual program of civil and religious events where food takes center stage.
The work behind the scenes is entirely voluntary and largely family-run: the committee members' wives and children take turns in the kitchen and at the stalls. This is precisely why the festival has maintained such a genuine character, far removed from standardized formulas: those doing the cooking are the very people celebrating.
The centerpiece of the event is trippa alla molinarese, prepared according to the village's ancient and jealously guarded recipe: a long, slow simmer in tomato sauce with the addition of potatoes, which transforms a humble cut of meat into a dense, flavorful dish. It represents the humble origins of the territoryโa cuisine that wasted nothing and has now become a source of local pride. It is a dish to be enjoyed hot, sitting at the tables in the square, setting the tone for the entire evening.
At the food stalls, the tripe is not alone. The evenings also feature:
The stage is Piazza Madonna delle Grazie, where the committee sets up the stalls and the music area. In past editions, the stalls opened at 8:00 PM, with evenings animated by live music and entertainment until late; in 2024, for example, the Armony Band and the Azzurro 2024 Band performed. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the festival doesn't stop: it moves to the San Giuseppe parish hall, just a few steps from the squareโa proven solution that has saved more than one edition over the years.
Although it is the festival of a small town, the Tripe Festival attracts visitors from across the Sannio province and even from the neighboring areas of Puglia and Molise, along the Fortore axis. It is a natural catchment area: here, administrative boundaries matter less than the ridge roads and family ties, and a well-executed festival quickly becomes a regional appointment. Visitors from outside find exactly what they are looking for: real food, popular prices, and no pretense.
The Municipality of Molinara is a hillside village in the Sannio Beneventano, in Campania, an area where the cuisine remains tied to the land, shepherding, meats, and legumes. The dishes are robust, designed for field work rather than for photographs: this is precisely why the festivals in this part of the Benevento province remain among the most interesting in the region for those seeking unrefined flavors. In this context, tripe is not a culinary curiosity but a piece of collective memory.
Two evenings, one dish, an entire community at work: the Tripe Festival is the kind of event that explains better than any guidebook what an Italian village festival is all about. You eat well, spend little, dance in the square, and leave with the feeling of having truly known a village, not just a recipe. For those visiting the Sannio in early July, Molinara is a stop worth the detour.
For 2026, the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee scheduled the Molinara Tripe Festival for Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, shifting it by a few days from the usual late June dates to coincide with the celebrations in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie. This is the fourteenth edition of an event that has earned a loyal following in the province of Benevento.
As always, the center of attention is the trippa alla molinarese, cooked according to the village's ancient recipe, slow-cooked in tomato sauce with potatoes. Alongside it, at the food stalls, were other Sannio specialties: pasta with tripe sauce, grilled meats and sausages, local cheeses and cured meats, traditional desserts, and local red wine.
The two evenings were accompanied by live music and entertainment, following the proven formula of previous years, with the civil program built alongside the religious one by the committee and parish priest Father Sergio Ingegno. The committee also had a backup plan in case of rain: moving to the San Giuseppe parish hall, near the festival square.
The edition confirmed the supra-municipal vocation of the festival, capable of attracting visitors from across the Sannio province and the neighboring areas of Puglia and Molise along the Fortore axis.

Exact times and names of musical groups for the 2026 edition were not released in the sources consulted: in previous editions, stalls opened at 8:00 PM.
Piazza Madonna delle Grazie, in the center of Molinara (BN), Campania. In case of rain, the event moves to the San Giuseppe parish hall, just a few steps from the square.
By car from Benevento, head up towards the Fortore valley along the SS 212 Fortorina: Molinara is about thirty kilometers from the provincial capital. Those arriving from Puglia or Molise can reach the village via the provincial roads of the Fortore area. There are no direct train connections: the reference station is Benevento, from which it is best to continue by car.
Parking is available along the streets of the town center: on busy evenings, it is best to arrive early and leave your car at the entrance to the village. In previous editions, the food stalls opened at 8:00 PM and the party continued until late at night.
Access to the square is free. Tastings are paid for directly at the stalls, with the affordable prices typical of village festivals; the official price list is not published online.
Bring cash (electronic payment is not guaranteed at the stalls), pack a light sweater as the hillside evenings can get cool, and save some appetite for the traditional local desserts. For accommodation, the most options are found in the nearby towns of the Fortore area and in Benevento.
