About Misteri di Santa Cristina

Every July 23rd and 24th, the village of Bolsena, located on the lake of the same name, revives one of the oldest and most evocative religious traditions in the Lazio region: the Misteri di Santa Cristina. Along the streets of the historic center, dozens of performers bring to life silent, motionless living tableaux that reenact the martyrdom of the young patron saint. The statue of the Saint is carried in procession through five squares, where scenes of her torture unfold, from the famous Martyrdom of the Snakes to the final Glory. A free, intense, and deeply felt festival for the Bolsena community.

A tradition spanning centuries

The Misteri di Santa Cristina are among the oldest and most distinctive historical-religious reenactments in the Tuscia area of Viterbo. Every year, on July 23rd and 24th, the town of Bolsena, in the province of Viterbo (Lazio), renews a ritual with roots dating back to the 16th century, with the first documented descriptions appearing in the early 19th century. The event celebrates Saint Christina, a young martyr who lived during the persecutions of Diocletian and is the patron saint of the city, whose relics are kept in the Basilica dedicated to her.

The Misteri: living tableaux of martyrdom

The "Misteri" are living tableaux, sacred scenes performed by actors who remain silent and motionless, almost statue-like in their poses, to evoke the episodes of the torture suffered by the Saint. This is not a professional theatrical performance, but a genuine form of popular prayer and devotion in which hundreds of Bolsena residents of all ages participate. The scenes represented include the martyrdom of the rods, the arrows, the cauldron, the wheel, the cutting of the tongue, the attempted drowning in the lake, and the final Glory, depicting the protagonist's ascension to heaven.

The procession and the five squares

On the evening of July 23rd, around 10:00 PM, the statue of the Martyr is carried on shoulders in a procession from the Basilica of Santa Cristina to the church of SS. Salvatore, in the medieval Castello district. Along the way, the statue passes through the five main squares of the historic center, where stages are set up for the living tableaux. On the morning of July 24th, the route is repeated in reverse, from the old village back to the Basilica, with the performance of further scenes of the martyrdom.

The Serparo, the most famous scene

Among all the Misteri, the most deeply rooted in tradition and the most spectacular is the Martyrdom of the Snakes. The figure of the Serparo brings reptiles close to the face of the young girl portraying the Saint, mimicking the effect of poison in a scene of great emotional intensity, from which only the martyr's prayer saves her. Until relatively recently, live snakes caught in the countryside around Bolsena in the days leading up to the festival were used.

Bolsena, the village on the lake

Nestled on the shores of the largest volcanic lake in Europe, Bolsena is one of the most charming villages in Lazio, also famous for the Eucharistic Miracle of 1263 that gave rise to the Corpus Domini feast. Attending the Misteri means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of Tuscia, amidst medieval alleys, popular devotion, and the charm of a community that has proudly guarded the memory of its patron saint for centuries. The event is completely free and open to everyone.
