Treviglio returns to the 16th century to relive the Miracle of 1522
"Miracol si grida" is the historical re-enactment with which Treviglio (province of Bergamo) brings back to life one of the foundational episodes of its identity: the Miracle of 1522. That year, the French general Odet de Foix, Viscount of Lautrec, threatened to destroy the city; according to tradition, the tears shed by an image of the Madonna stopped the army and saved Treviglio. This is the origin of the devotion to the Madonna delle Lacrime (Our Lady of Tears), the city's patron saint.
The event stages a grand historical procession: about a hundred participants in 16th-century costumes — commoners, clergy, nobles — parade through the streets of the historic centre, concluding their route in front of the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Lacrime. The re-enactment is organised by the Pro Loco of Treviglio with the support of the municipal administration and attracts thousands of spectators every year.
Alongside the procession, the event offers "Miracol si grida: l'attesa" (The Waiting for the Miracle), which recreates the tense moments of prayer on the eve of the event: in symbolic locations in the city, including the Chapel of the Miracle, some figures re-enact the monastic life of the era. It's a way to immerse the public in the atmosphere of the night preceding the miracle.
The 2026 edition, the nineteenth, confirms the two-part format. The novelty of recent editions is the prologue "l'attesa", which recreates the eve of the Miracle. For the procession, the starting point moves to Piazza Cameroni, a more contained and manageable space compared to previous editions.
Event organised by the Pro Loco of Treviglio with the patronage of the Municipality.
Late March. 2026 Edition: the procession takes place on Sunday, March 29th from 2:30 PM; "l'attesa" is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
Historic centre of Treviglio; the procession starts from Piazza Cameroni and ends at the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Lacrime.
Treviglio is reachable by train (Treviglio Centrale and Treviglio Ovest) and by car via the A35 BreBeMi motorway. Free admission.
