The biennial festival dedicated to the Biancona, the white potato of the village of Oreno
In Oreno, a hamlet of Vimercate in the Province of Monza and Brianza, the Potato Festival is the village's defining event. Organized by the Circolo Culturale Orenese (CCO), founded in 1966, the festival is held every two years in September between Piazza San Michele and the streets of the historic village center.
The heart of the festival is the Biancona of Oreno, the local white potato that represents a living part of the area's agricultural history and has obtained the Municipal Designation (De.Co.). Food stands offer potato-based dishes and traditional specialties, with a rich array of food and wine proposals spread across the weekends of the event.
Beyond the food, the Festival is famous for its grand medieval historical procession: costumed participants, districts, and re-enactments bring the village to life, which for the occasion returns to its historical appearance. The program is enriched by live music, shows, entertainment for children, and guided tours of Oreno's notable sites, including Villa Gallarati Scotti and the Casino di Caccia Borromeo with its frescoes.
The 2026 edition, the XXXI, holds special significance as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Circolo Culturale Orenese, which has been the guardian of the village's cultural and gastronomic traditions for almost six decades. In years when the Festival is not held, the CCO organizes the preparatory event "Aspettando la Sagra della Patata" (Waiting for the Potato Festival).
The XXXI edition of the Oreno Potato Festival is scheduled for September 2026 and marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Circolo Culturale Orenese, which organizes it. The biennial event brings back to the village of Oreno the stands dedicated to the Biancona De.Co., the grand medieval historical procession, and the cultural initiatives that characterize it.
In anticipation of the edition, the Circolo has begun recruiting extras for the historical procession, a sign of the preparatory work involving the village community.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (dates of weekends, times of stands and shows) will be published by the Circolo Culturale Orenese. The established structure of the Festival includes:
